TAMPA, Fla. -- Darryl Strawberry is waiting to find out what
his baseball future holds.
"He sounded a little uncomfortable, not knowing what his future will be," New York Yankees manager Joe Torre said Saturday after talking to Strawberry. "He sounded OK, not wonderful, but that's understandable." Strawberry failed a drug test Jan. 19, violating terms of his probation from a no-contest plea to charges of cocaine possession and soliciting a prostitute in Tampa last spring. A judge approved the Florida Department of Corrections' recommendation for enhanced supervision and treatment. Strawberry, an eight-time All-Star who turns 38 next month, has twice been suspended because of cocaine, and baseball officials have said a ban of about one year is probable. The penalty might include a provision for a shorter ban if Strawberry stays clean, an incentive for the outfielder to follow his aftercare program. "Sitting around and having your mind start thinking about things, it's really tough," Torre said. "Certainly it's easier when you're busy. "That's why I raise the question too, it's all well and good to say he's going to be suspended for two months, three months, five months, whatever it is. But during that time, what is he doing." A decision from commissioner Bud Selig is not expected until Monday at the earliest. Strawberry has been barred from working out with the Yankees while the matter is under review. Torre talked with Strawberry about five minutes, offering encouragement. "Certainly, whatever the outcome is, you have to try and keep a positive outlook," Torre said. "I think he's basically trying to find out what his game plan is going to be. He'll wait until this comes down and plan." There has been speculation Strawberry might retire if handed a lengthy suspension, which Torre said is premature. "He may say it and then when the time comes, may feel differently," Torre said. | ALSO SEE Strawberry's fate won't be decided until next week Gammons: Straw stirs again Strawberry tested positive for cocaine in January Darryl Strawberry chronology AUDIO/VIDEO Darryl Strawberry has no comment. wav: 78 k RealAudio: 14.4 | 28.8 | 56.6 David Cone will not abandon a friend in need. wav: 128 k RealAudio: 14.4 | 28.8 | 56.6 Chuck Knoblauch discusses his meeting with Darryl Strawberry. wav: 52 k RealAudio: 14.4 | 28.8 | 56.6 George Steinbrenner will not drop Darryl Strawberry. wav: 104 k RealAudio: 14.4 | 28.8 | 56.6 Joe Torre says Darryl Strawberry is easy to manage. wav: 132 k RealAudio: 14.4 | 28.8 | 56.6 The Boss discusses Darryl Strawberry's substance abuse problem. wav: 200 k RealAudio: 14.4 | 28.8 | 56.6 |
