PHOENIX (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks caught a couple of
breaks they needed and avoided one they didn't.
| | Arizona's Steve Finley was plunked on the left hand by Dodgers pitcher Onan Masaoka in the eighth Tuesday. Finley left, but tests found no broken bones. |
Pinch-hitter David Dellucci drove in the go-ahead run with a
two-out infield single in the eighth inning, and Arizona used two
Los Angeles errors to score three unearned runs and beat the
Dodgers 5-4 on Tuesday night.
Arizona remained 4½ games behind the New York Mets in the wild
card race and 8½ games behind San Francisco in the NL West.
"Every game has postseason implications," said Arizona
starter Curt Schilling, who scattered four hits over six innings
before Los Angeles rallied.
Dave Hansen tied the score 4-4 in the seventh with his seventh
pinch-hit homer of the season, a three-run drive that broke the
previous major league record of six pinch-homers, set by Johnny
Frederick with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1932.
"He's the greatest," Los Angeles manager Davey Johnson said.
"He has been unbelievable. He's not a home run hitter. He's just a
line-drive hitter."
Arizona's game-winning rally in the eighth almost proved
disastrous to the Diamondbacks' postseason hopes.
Steve Finley was hit on the left hand by Onan Masaoka (1-1)
leading off the eighth. Finley jumped out of the batters' box,
dropped to his knees and kneeled forward with his head on the
ground. He remained in that position for a couple of minutes before
gingerly walking off the field.
Preliminary X-rays, however, showed no apparent breaks in
Finley's hand.
"Right now we feel like we might have gotten fortunate,"
Arizona manager Buck Showalter said.
Pinch-runner Matt Mieske replaced Finley, then advanced to
second on Danny Bautista's sacrifice and to third on Hanley Frias'
flyout to right.
Dellucci followed with a high chopper to shortstop and beat Alex
Cora's throw to first, allowing Mieske to score the go-ahead run.
"It feels great to finally contribute," Dellucci said. "The
guy threw me a changeup and I put the ball in play in the perfect
spot."
Byung-Hyun Kim (6-5) pitched a one-hit eighth and Matt Mantei
finished with a perfect ninth for his 14th save in 16 chances.
Schilling, who lost four consecutive starts, gave up four runs
and six hits in seven innings. He is just 4-5 since Arizona
acquired him from Philadelphia in July, and 10-11 overall.
"I pitched just well enough to lose," Schilling said. "I
haven't won a game in a while, but we haven't won a game I've
started in a while, which is a bigger problem for me."
Dodgers right-hander Luke Prokopec, making his first major
league start, gave up four runs -- just one earned -- and six hits in
4 1/3 innings.
"He deserved a better fate," Johnson said. "He pitched great,
but we didn't give him a lot of help defensively."
Eric Karros put the Dodgers ahead with a sacrifice fly in the
fourth, but the Diamondbacks took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half on
a run-scoring error by Cora on Kelly Stinnett's grounder, and
Schilling's RBI double.
Arizona made it 4-1 in the fifth on Luis Gonzalez's RBI double
and a run-scoring error by second baseman Jeff Branson.
Game notes Schilling hasn't won since Aug. 18. The no-decision was his
first since June 21, a span of 15 starts. ... Gary Sheffield's
fourth-inning double was his third in two nights. ... Prokopec hit
consecutive batters in the first inning. ... Craig Counsell started
in place of Matt Williams at third base for the Diamondbacks even
though Williams has seven hits in his last 15 at-bats. Counsell
went 1-for-2 with a stolen base. ... Dodgers OF Tom Goodwin beat
out a bunt single in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to a
career-best 13 games.
