GAME LOG
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- It's a rare night when the San Francisco
Giants lose in Pacific Bell Park. It's even rarer when they lose
after taking a big lead.
The San Diego Padres stopped the Giants' nine-game winning
streak, overcoming a six-run deficit to beat San Francisco 10-7
Friday night as John Mabry drove in three runs.
| | Damian Jackson and the Padres' defense held the Giants without a run in the last three innings Friday night. |
"That's a tough way to lose it," Giants manager Dusty Baker
said. "It seems like every ball found a hole. Everybody gets their
turn. There's no explanation, no nothing."
Livan Hernandez, who has won seven straight home decisions, took
a 7-1 lead into the seventh before allowing Mabry's two-run homer.
Including Friday, the Giants have won 69 of 76 games when
they've carried a lead into the eighth.
"Usually we're the ones who come up with those kind of
rallies," Baker said. "We usually do that to our opponents."
San Diego tied it in a seven-run eighth when Eric Owens hit an
RBI single off Felix Rodriguez, Ryan Klesko had a two-run single
off Alan Embree (2-4) and Dave Magadan hit an RBI single.
Mabry then hit a grounder to second that drove in the go-ahead
run. Desi Relaford and Ben Davis followed with RBI singles off Doug
Henry.
"It started looking like a merry-go-round after awhile," Baker
said. "Sooner or later it happens to everybody. You don't like it,
but it's part of the game."
Carlos Almanzar (4-4) pitched a two-hit seventh. Trevor Hoffman
got three outs for his 39th save in 46 chances.
"We were as down and dead as a team could get in the middle
innings," Magadan said. "We were succumbing to Hernandez and
hitting his pitch to get ourselves out. Then we started getting
patient and more aggressive on the pitches we could handle."
San Francisco's NL West lead was cut to 7{ games over
second-place Arizona. It was the first time the Giants lost ground
since Aug. 20.
"It's just one of those things," Henry said. "I wouldn't have
done anything different."
San Francisco was outhit 16-13 as the Padres overcame a six-run
deficit for the first time this season. The Giants, who have the
best home record in the major leagues, dropped to 50-21 at Pacific
Bell Park.
"When you get pummeled like we did last night (a 13-0 Giants
win) and were getting pummeled again, it can be demoralizing,"
Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "Things just started going out
way. The Giants are having a great year, but this showed we're not
quitting."
Hernandez, 11-2 at home this year, allowed three runs and eight
hits in seven innings.
San Diego's Will Cunnane, making his third start of the season,
allowed five runs and eight hits in four innings. He pitched in
place of Adam Eaton, who was fatigued and passed over in the
rotation.
Jeff Kent's sacrifice fly put the Giants ahead in the first,
and San Francisco made it 3-0 in the third on J.T. Snow's two-run
triple.
Marvin Benard and Bonds each singled home runs in the fourth and
Rich Aurilia's 19th homer, tops among all NL shortstops, increased
the lead to 6-0 in the fifth against Dave Maurer.
Hernandez allowed an RBI single to Davis in the sixth, then
escaped a bases-loaded one-out jam by striking out pinch-hitter Ed
Sprague and retiring Damian Jackson on a groundout.
Heathcliffe Slocumb balked home Bill Mueller with the bases
loaded in the sixth.
