MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Pitching on jelly legs and determination, Kevin
Brown made the Milwaukee Brewers feel a little bit sick.

Brown allowed five hits in seven innings and Los Angeles had a
five-run first against Jeff D'Amico as the surging Dodgers beat the
Brewers 5-3 Monday night.
Brown (12-5) still was feeling the effects of a viral infection
that woke him up in the middle of the night Thursday and kept
him in his Chicago hotel bed for two days. Manager Davey Johnson
said he was surprised Brown didn't want to push his next start back
a few days.
"I definitely wasn't normal," said Brown, who struck out seven
and didn't want to leave the game in the eighth inning. "I was
kind of wobbly the whole night. I'm just a little weak-kneed -- jelly legs, however you want to put it."
Los Angeles won for the seventh time in eight games -- all while
star outfielder Gary Sheffield has been out with flu and a
suspension. The Dodgers, six games behind division-leading San
Francisco, pulled within 2½ games of Arizona for second place in
the NL West.
"I didn't really see any fatigue at all," Dodgers catcher Todd
Hundley said of Brown. "For him to come off (being sick) like that
is just incredible."
A victim of poor run support throughout the season, Brown had a
five-run lead before he took the mound. The anticipated pitching
duel between D'Amico, who hadn't lost since June 5, and Brown was
over moments after it began.
D'Amico's eight-game winning streak was snapped with the loss,
which left him two short of the franchise record for consecutive
victories.
D'Amico (10-5) allowed a single to Tom Goodwin on the game's
first pitch, and singles by Mark Grudzielanek, Shawn Green and Eric
Karros followed.
Hundley added a sacrifice fly and Adrian Beltre, who hit .538
with 11 RBI last week, had a two-run homer that capped the rally.
"It was just bad command," D'Amico said. "I tried to go
inside, but I'd leave pitches out over the plate. I mean, they're
going to hit those pitches."
It was D'Amico's worst inning of the season, and it came in his
second-worst start. His ERA jumped from 1.94 to 2.20.
D'Amico settled down, allowing just three more hits and striking
out six while pitching through the seventh inning, but the Brewers
never mounted a large rally against Brown. D'Amico retired 13 of
his last 14 hitters.
"He's had one bad inning the last two months," Milwaukee
manager Davey Lopes said with a grin. "That's not too bad. I'll
take that any time. He was long overdue for a bad inning, for that
matter, or a bad ballgame."
Milwaukee closed to 5-3 in the sixth on Geoff Jenkins' triple,
Richie Sexson's RBI double and Tyler Houston's RBI single. But
reliever Terry Adams struck out Sexson and Jeromy Burnitz in the
eighth, and Jeff Shaw survived a two-out rally attempt in the ninth
for his 22nd save in 29 chances.
Henry Blanco and pinch-hitter Raul Casanova singled against
Shaw, and pinch-runner James Mouton stole second before Marquis
Grissom's game-ending popout to second. Brewers fans lustily booed
Grissom, who went 0-for-5 and is hitting .241 while making $5
million this season.
Moments before the game began, outfielder Bruce Aven was
scratched from the Dodgers' starting lineup with a muscle strain in
his left side. Aven, who hit two homers Sunday against the Cubs
in just his second game since being recalled from Triple-A
Albuquerque, was replaced by Jim Leyritz.
"We're just short on bodies now," Dodgers manager Davey
Johnson said. "Hopefully we can get some people in here in the
next couple of days."
Game notes
D'Amico was hit on the right foot by Goodwin's grounder in
the seventh, but he threw out Goodwin at first and finished the
inning. ... Sheffield missed his eighth straight game due to a
five-game suspension and a bout of flu. He stayed in Los Angeles
while the team traveled to Chicago, but he might fly out for
Tuesday's game. ... Brewers 3B Jose Hernandez, out since Aug. 10
with back spasms, will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A
Indianapolis on Tuesday. He is hitting .247 with 11 homers and 110
strikeouts this season. ... Blanco threw out Beltre on a steal
attempt in the eighth. Blanco has thrown out 34 of 60 potential
base stealers this year.
