Arizona's seven-game win streak halted

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks' seven-game winning streak ended with a bang. Make that 19 bangs.

Tyler Houston
Liftoff: Milwaukee's Tyler Houston blasted two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the 16-8 romp past the Diamondbacks on Monday.

The Milwaukee Brewers knocked Arizona's pitching staff around for 19 hits in a 16-8 victory Monday night.

Tyler Houston, who hadn't played much lately and was hitless in his last nine at-bats, drove in five runs with two homers, including a three-run shot in an eight-run second inning.

"It was long overdue," manager Davey Lopes said. "We've been struggling offensively as a team all season long. But this gives you an indication of what we're capable of doing. It's been a bad year for us, but we're not as bad as statistics say we are."

Mark Loretta and Richie Sexson also homered in the second-inning uprising. Loretta, in his fourth game since coming off the disabled list, was 3-for-5 with three RBIs as Milwaukee got 19 hits, 10 for extra bases.

The 16 runs and 19 hits were both season highs for the Brewers.

Arizona used all six relievers. The only Diamondbacks' pitcher who didn't allow a hit was closer Matt Mantei, who pitched the ninth.

"Our relievers have been doing great all year," said Steve Finley, who was 2-for-3 with a double and triple for Arizona. "If they're going to have a bad game, let's let them do it all in one game and get it out of their system. That's the way I look at it."

Damian Miller had a pair of RBI doubles for the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks rallied from an 8-0 deficit to cut the lead to 8-7, but a throwing error by shortstop Tony Womack opened the way for three unearned runs in the fifth.

"I felt if we could get a couple of shutdowns, we had a fair shot at it," manager Buck Showalter. "We just never could stem the tide."

With the bases loaded and two outs, Henry Blanco barely checked his swing on what would have been strike three. Then he hit a routine grounder to Womack, who bobbled it, then threw high to first as a run scored. Pinch-hitter Marquis Grissom followed with a two-run single to make it 11-7.

An RBI double by Jeromy Burnitz and Houston's two-run homer made it 14-7 in the sixth.

"I haven't really been playing much lately at all," Houston said. "I've been fiddling with my swing in the cage with Rod Carew. I think I found something that's going to work for me and I'm hoping to keep it going."

The three home runs in an inning tied a Brewers franchise record.

Everett Stull (2-3) pitched four scoreless innings to get his second big league victory and first since April 22.

Armando Reynoso, who had won his last three starts and was 5-1 in his last seven, didn't make it through the second inning.

"I was throwing high pitches," Reynoso said, "and when you are throwing high and are behind the hitters, you're going to pay, and that's what happened tonight."

Reynoso (10-8) gave up the three-run homer to Houston and a two-run homer to Loretta, along with an RBI single by James Mouton. Russ Springer relieved Reynoso and gave up a single to Burnitz, then a two-run homer by Sexson, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Houston's 14 home runs are a career high. It was his second multi-homer game of the season and third of his career.

The Diamondbacks, who came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 Sunday, scored two in the second, then five in the fourth on an RBI double by Miller and five singles. The rally ended when Steve Finley flied out to deep center with the bases loaded.
