GAME LOG
HOUSTON (AP) -- Jeff Bagwell made No. 300 a meaningful one. Bagwell homered twice, becoming the first Houston player to reach 300 in a career, and drove in five runs Saturday night as the Astros beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-8. "This means a lot. I never thought I'd hit one major league home run, much less 300. To win the game and get 300 at the same time is really special," Bagwell said. Bagwell hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning. Julio Lugo walked with two outs and Bagwell connected against Juan Acevedo (2-5) for his 37th home run. "I knew I was within two before the game," Bagwell said. "So I was kind of thinking about it the batting circle. I thought it would be a nice way to win the game with my 300th home run." Houston Manager Larry Dierker recognized the drama of the home run. "That was the most dramatic one he's hit this year," Dierker said. "In view of the milestone maybe it's his most dramatic ever." Bagwell has 102 RBIs, the fifth straight year he's had at least 100 RBIs. All 300 of his lifetime home runs have come for Houston. Bagwell has earned the respect of Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes. "This is the fifth or sixth year that he's been one of the dominant players not only in this division, but in the league," Lopes said. "He just doesn't get the publicity that the guys who hit 60 or 70 home runs get." The Astros won their season-high sixth in a row. Bagwell has six home runs in his last six games, and a 17-game hitting streak. Bagwell had his 22nd career multihomer game, including four this season. Jose Cabrera (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three. Octavio Dotel pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances. Moises Alou scored on a single by Chris Truby in the Houston, and Mitch Meluskey hit an RBI single in the seventh that made it 8-all. Milwaukee scored five times in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead. Jeromy Burnitz singled, Charlie Hayes reached on a catcher's interference call and both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Chris Holt. Ron Belliard hit an RBI single, Henry Blanco doubled home a run, James Mouton hit a two-run triple and Mark Loretta added an RBI single. Burnitz hit a three-run homer, his 24th, in the first. Bagwell hit a three-run homer to cap Houston's six-run second. Game notesSince going to the bullpen July 6, Dotel is 1-0 with eight saves in 10 opportunities and a 2.29 ERA. ... Bagwell and Richard Hidalgo are only the second Astros duo to have 30 or more homers in the same season. The other was Moises Alou (38) and Bagwell (34) in 1998. ... Bagwell's longest hitting streak in his career is 18 games. ... Milwaukee's Marquis Grissom is two stolen bases short of 400 for his career. ... Bagwell is the eighth player in major league history to record five straight seasons with 30 home runs, 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Milwaukee Clubhouse Houston Clubhouse RECAPS Cleveland 10 Seattle 4
