HOUSTON (AP) -- Wade Miller admits he was getting a little tired in the seventh inning, and Astros manager Larry Dierker knows why. "It didn't really look like a pitcher pitching a no-hitter," Astros manager Larry Dierker said after Miller took a no-hit bid into the seventh and Houston hung on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 Friday night. "He was scattering it around and wasn't ahead in the count much. Geoff Jenkins' leadoff homer in the seventh was the first hit off Miller (2-4), a drive off the screen on the right-field foul pole. "I guess I did get tired in the seventh," said Miller, who threw 115 pitches and was removed later in the inning. "I didn't realize I had that many pitches. I think I had a lot of 10-pitch at bats." In the first six innings, Miller struck out five and allowed only three runners: two on walks and one on an error. He retired 11 in a row from the second through the fifth innings. But he couldn't get anyone out in the seventh, leaving after the home run, two singles and a walk. "Burt Hooton told me Miller threw more pitches in pregame warmups than he ever had seen anyone throw," Dierker said, referring to his pitching coach. "I think he ran out of gas in the seventh because of a combination of too many pregame pitches and not getting ahead in the count. We need to work with him on that because he needs to be able to go to the eighth and beyond sometimes." Miller, who won for the first time in five starts since July 22, wound up allowing two runs and three his in six-plus innings. He has gone eight innings only once in 13 starts. "As the season goes on, it takes me a little longer to get loose," Miller said. "I like to throw as many pitches as possible before the game so I can come out throwing fresh. Maybe it hurts me later in the games but it's something I have done the past three or four years." "When you get ahead on the count, nine times out of 10 you're going to get guys out," said Charlie Hayes, who got one of the hits off Miller. "When he was ahead in the count, he got us out. Toward the end, he wasn't getting ahead and that's when we scored." Brewers manager Davey Lopes said his team partly caused Miller's success. "He had a good fastball but not an overpowering one," Lopes said. "He didn't use hardly any breaking balls. He had a high pitch count and it would have been more if we had been more disciplined." Octavio Dotel got six outs for his eighth save in 10 chances as the Astros matched their longest winning streak of the season at five. Roger Cedeno, playing for the first time in 75 games since breaking his hand May 26, was 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI. Jimmy Haynes (10-11) allowed three runs and eight hits in five innings, dropping to 1-4 in seven starts since the All-Star break. The Brewers, who got just six hits, had won their previous three games. Cedeno scored the game's first run when he singled, stole second and came around on Jeff Bagwell's single. In the fifth, Cedeno singled, took third when Julio Lugo's single to left that was misplayed by Jenkins for an error and scored on Bagwell's sacrifice fly. Bill Spiers' had an RBI single later in the inning for a 3-0 lead. Cedeno hit an RBI single in the sixth off Everett Stull, stole second and scored on Richard Hidalgo's double. making it 5-0. Hayes' RBI single chased Miller in the seventh, and Marc Valdes gave up Mark Loretta's run-scoring single and Jenkins' sacrifice fly. Game notesThe Brewers are the only major league team that hasn't had a four-game winning streak. They've won three in a row five times. ... Bagwell extended his hitting streak to 16 games. ...
