MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- David McCarty has always felt comfortable hitting in the Metrodome. McCarty, who began his major league career with the Twins, broke a 13 at-bat hitless streak by going 3-for-4 with three RBI, and the Kansas City Royals snapped a seven-game losing streak at the Metrodome with a 9-3 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday night. "This is a good place to get your hits in because of the turf and the good hitting background here," McCarty said. "The one problem is that when there aren't a lot of people in the stands, the ball doesn't carry well. So it's really not a good park to hit home runs in." Rey Sanchez and Hector Ortiz added three hits apiece, and Mark Quinn homered as the Royals got 16 hits to back Brian Meadows (2-0). Meadows, making his third appearance since coming over from San Diego in a trade last month, allowed three runs and six hits in eight innings. He walked three and struck out four. "He's a contact pitcher, and he doesn't try to do more than he's capable of doing," Royals manager Tony Muser said of Meadows. "He throws strikes, and the defense is usually on their toes because they know the ball is coming." Kansas City took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on McCarty's 10th homer, before scoring four runs off J.C. Romero (2-2) in the third. "I was just trying to put an easy swing on the ball," McCarty said of the home run, a 423-foot shot to center. "The last few games I felt like I had been overswinging a little bit, so I was just looking for a line drive." Johnny Damon led off the third with a single, stole second and went to third on Sanchez's bunt single. Mike Sweeney reached on first baseman Ron Coomer's error, allowing Damon to score. After a walk to Jermaine Dye loaded the bases, Joe Randa had an RBI groundout and McCarty added a two-run single. Ortiz, who had his sixth multihit game in 11 starts since coming up from Triple-A Omaha, had a two-run single in the fifth to give Kansas City an 8-0 lead. Cristian Guzman hit his major league-leading 18th triple in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Jacque Jones, who led off with a single. Those were only two of four hits by the Twins until the late innings. "Sometimes you get in the habit of trying to do too much," Twins infielder Denny Hocking said of his team's woes at the plate. "We kept trying to pull the ball and we had too many easy outs." Game notesQuinn's 18 homers lead all rookies. ... Damon, who went 2-for-5, leads the majors with 67 hits since the All-Star break. ... The Royals had three walks and have received the least amount of free-passes than any team in the AL with 385. ...
