Jays manage only one run off Redman

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Mark Redman tries to put the Minnesota Twins in position to win every time he pitches.

The Minnesota rookie left-hander did just that by pitching six strong innings as the Twins beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 Saturday night.

"Every time I take the mound, my goal is to have a quality start," Redman said. "If the win goes under my name that's a bonus, but my goal is to help the team win games."

Redman (11-5) allowed one run, six hits, struck out three and walked one for the Twins, who have won six of their last 10.

Redman, who leads AL rookies in victories, ERA (4.43), strikeouts (99) and innings pitched (126), was in trouble just once -- in the second inning -- when Toronto got three of its hits and its only run off him.

But he didn't think it was easy.

"I felt like I was struggling out there through six innings," said Redman, whose 11 victories ties him with Eric Milton for the team lead. "I couldn't get my curveball where I wanted it. I felt like I was laboring out there."

LaTroy Hawkins pitched two innings and struck out four of six batters to earn his eighth save in as many chances.

Torii Hunter added a two-run homer for the Twins, his first of the season, to lead a 13-hit attack.

Hunter, recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake City on July 29 to shore up Minnesota's outfield, hit an 0-2 pitch from Toronto starter Esteban Loaiza (6-9) over the right-field wall in the third with one on to give the Twins a 5-1 lead.

"Torii's doing fine," said Twins manager Tom Kelly, after some prodding. "He got a nice hanger to hit. Loaiza made a bad pitch, but he (Hunter) did hit it, so give him credit."

Hunter, who had three hits and is 17-for-37 (.459) in his last 10 games, also made up for a dropped ball in center field by throwing out Tony Batista at the plate with a perfect throw to catcher Danny Ardoin to end the fourth.

"It's good to make up for the error like that," said Hunter, who waved off left fielder Jacque Jones too late to catch Batista's fly ball. "I should have taken over. It's my fault. I was hoping I could make up for it."

Craig Grebeck went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Shannon Stewart was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI for Toronto, which has lost 10 of its last 12 road games.

A throwing error by Toronto shortstop Alex Gonzalez led to two unearned runs by the Twins in the first. Jay Canizaro reached base on Gonzalez's low throw and scored from first on a double by Matt Lawton.

Lawton was caught in a rundown on a fielder's choice by Ron Coomer, but Coomer took second on the play and scored on David Ortiz's single.

"Loaiza pitched well enough," Toronto manager Jim Fregosi said. "In that first inning you had an error and then a high bouncer. His bad pitch was when he hung a slider to Hunter."

Toronto came back with a run in the second when Carlos Delgado walked and scored one out later on consecutive singles by Todd Greene, Dave Martinez and Grebeck.

Canizaro drove in a run for the Twins in the second with a two-out single to make it 3-1.

Stewart added an RBI single for Toronto in the seventh off reliever Joe Mays, who had been demoted to the Twins bullpen earlier in the week.

Coomer's RBI single in the eighth made it 6-2. Gonzalez added an RBI single in the ninth for Toronto's final run.
