GAME LOG
MIAMI (AP) -- Adam Eaton had Preston Wilson working extra in the batting cages after Friday night's game. The rest of the Marlins certainly could have joined Wilson. Eaton pitched eight strong innings, giving up six hits in the longest outing of his career, as the Padres beat Florida 3-0. "This guy's very impressive," Marlins manager John Boles said. "His last fastball of the eighth inning was 96 mph. He's a bright young star on the horizon." Eaton (4-2) struck out six and walked two en route to his fourth career win in 14 starts. The victory was the Padres' 10th in 13 games. "In a nutshell, he kept us off balance all night," Florida's Mike Lowell said. "He had good stuff. His key was he was throwing strikes." The Marlins, shut out for the fourth time this season, lost for just the second time in nine games. Eaton, whose longest previous outing had been 7 2-3 innings on June 17 against Cincinnati, gave up hits to two of the first three batters he faced before retiring nine in a row and 12 of the next 13 Marlins. "It's nice to get eight innings under my belt and help the team win," said Eaton, who admittedly wanted to pitch a complete game. "I'm 2-0 in my last two starts, so I can't complain." With runners on first and third and two outs in the eighth, Eaton struck out Wilson to end the inning and the Marlins' best scoring threat. Eaton struck Wilson out three times, each time with runners in scoring position. After his third whiff, Wilson broke his bat in half, slamming it to the ground. Wilson, who has four hits in his last 26 at-bats, headed straight for the cages after the game. "This was as good of a pitcher as I've seen all year," Boles said. "I don't know who's pitched a better game against us with the stuff to go along with it." Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 31st save in 37 chances. He gave all the credit to Eaton's solid start. "He's shown facets of his game that for a 22-year-old with 10 starts or 11 starts or whatever it is under his belt, it's well beyond his years," Hoffman said. "You don't want to get too crazy over it, but I'm pleasantly surprised. He has the ability to bust open the radar gun when he needs to. He can reach back and get a little extra." A.J. Burnett (1-3) gave up four hits and all three runs. He left after Eric Owens singled to led off the eighth. Owens scored four batters later on Bret Boone's bases-loaded sacrifice fly. San Diego took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning. Owens reached first on shortstop Andy Fox's error, then moved to third on Mike Darr's single to right field. Darr stole second two pitches later, and Owens scored on catcher Ramon Castro's errant throw to second. San Diego made it 2-0 in the fourth inning when Phil Nevin led off with his 25th home run, breaking his career high for homers in a season. Nevin, with his second homer in as many games, surpassed his previous-best mark of 24 set last year. "I threw it up and in and that's where I wanted it," Burnett said. "But he was looking for it. I learn from that." Nevin improved to .550 (11-for-20 with five homers) in six games against Florida this season. He also has 11 RBIs. "He came through in the clutch and answered the bell," Eaton said. Game notesOwens (elbow) and 1B Ryan Klesko (calf) returned to the Padres' starting lineup after missing Thursday's game at Philadelphia. They combined to go 1-for-8 in their return. ...
