Rodriguez's first Marlins at-bat beats Astros

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MIAMI (AP) -- Henry Rodriguez got a nice welcome from those left in the announced crowd of 8,867 at Pro Player Stadium.

Rodriguez delivered a pinch-hit double in his first at-bat for Florida, setting up Luis Castillo's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning that lifted the Marlins over the Houston Astros 5-4 Wednesday night.

Dave Berg singled off Marc Valdes (2-3) to start the ninth and Rodriguez, acquired Monday from the Chicago Cubs, batted for Ramon Castro.

"As soon as I went up there, the fans started screaming. It was a great reception," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez blooped a double, and Jesus Sanchez pinch-ran. Mike Lowell was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with no outs, and Castillo followed with a single off Valdes' leg into center field.

"This feels great because of how they reacted," Rodriguez said.

Castillo was batting .197 with runners in scoring position before singling.

"I've been struggling with the RBIs," Castillo said. "In this at-bat, I thought about nobody being on base."

Dan Miceli (5-2) got the victory.

Julio Lugo, starting in place of injured second baseman Craig Biggio, had three hits for the Astros.

Biggio tore ligaments in his left knee after getting tangled up with Florida's Preston Wilson while taking a throw at second Tuesday night. On Wednesday, Biggio was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his 13-year career.

Jeff Bagwell and Lance Berkman hit consecutive home runs for Houston. Bagwell led off the fourth with his 29th home run and Berkman hit his 16th off Reid Cornelius. Moises Alou followed with a double, but was stranded.

"Anytime you walk off the field in the ninth inning, it's a bad feeling," Bagwell said. "A loss is a loss, but this is one that we really let slip away. It's very disappointing."

Astros starter Wade Miller faded in the sixth with a 4-1 lead. Wilson had an RBI grounder, and two walks loaded the bases with two outs.

Reliever Joe Slusarski walked Berg on four pitches, making it 4-3.

Houston chased Cornelius in the sixth behind Tony Eusebio's two-run double.

Andy Fox homered in the Marlins fifth.
