SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Kevin Nicholson didn't let his costly error affect his approach at the plate. Nicholson atoned for a two-run error by hitting an RBI single in the 10th inning as the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 10-9 Tuesday despite blowing an eight-run lead. "You leave the defense aside. It's same thing when you don't take at-bats to the field," Nicholson said. "You just do the best you can. It's all you can do. You can't put pressure on yourself." Nicholson's error came with two out in the seventh, when he went from second base and converged with shortstop Damian Jackson on a pop-up hit by Pat Burrell. The ball fell and two unearned runs scored, pulling the Phillies within 9-6. "We haven't played up the middle too much together," Nicholson said. "It's one of those things where the communication should have been better. That's a ball that must be caught. It wasn't a tough play. It was a matter of who was going to take charge." The Phillies tied it in the ninth on two-out homers by Scott Rolen and Burrell off closer Trevor Hoffman, who blew his fifth save since June 23. The Padres came back to win it in the 10th. Mike Darr led off with a single off Jeff Brantley (1-5) and was forced out at second on Ryan Klesko's grounder. Klesko stole second when Phil Nevin struck out and then came home on Nicholson's single to right field. "Obviously, it's disappointing," Brantley said. "I just didn't have a lot. I've gone out there four out of five days now. It's hard to go out there with what I had."' Carlos Almanzar (2-3) pitched one perfect inning to get the win for the Padres, who also let a 5-0 lead in the first slip away. "It was a great comeback," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "But we got down so much so fast. That puts so much stress on your club." John Mabry, acquired Monday in the trade that sent Al Martin to Seattle, hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat for San Diego to cap a five-run first inning off Robert Person. "It's a good feeling, a real good feeling," Mabry said. "I'm just happy to be here." Mike Darr hit a two-run shot earlier in the inning in his first game since being recalled Monday from Triple-A Las Vegas. Adam Eaton allowed five runs -- four earned -- and seven hits with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings in his first start against his former team. The Phillies dealt Eaton to San Diego last Nov. 10 with two other pitchers in exchange for Andy Ashby. Darr, who went 1-for-13 previously with the Padres this season, followed a leadoff single by Eric Owens in the first with his first homer of the season. Person then walked two batters before Mabry hit a 409-foot drive just over the center-field fence. Mabry had one homer and seven RBI with a .243 batting average in 48 games for Seattle. Owens went 3-for-6 and scored twice with a double and one RBI for his third straight multihit game. Klesko went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bobby Abreu hit a two-run double to help ignite the Phillies' rally in the seventh. Brian Hunter added a solo homer, his seventh of the season, in the eighth off Donne Wall, ending Wall's streak of 15 1/3 scoreless innings. Person gave up eight runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings in his third start since recovering from a right shoulder strain. The Phillies scored in the second, when Travis Lee doubled and eventually came home on Desi Relaford's sacrifice fly. The Padres, who won their third straight, matched their best winning streak since June 16-18. Game notes With the addition of Mabry and pitcher Heathcliff Slocumb, the Padres have had 48 players in the lineup this season, tying the club record set in 1991. ... RHP Paul Byrd of the Phillies will undergo surgery on his right shoulder to repair a labral tear on Wednesday. ...
