MONTREAL (AP) -- Darryl Kile stepped up when the St. Louis
Cardinals needed a stopper the most.
Kile pitched his first shutout in more than two years, and J.D.
Drew and Fernando Tatis homered to lead the Cardinals to a 4-0 victory over the Montreal Expos on Monday night.

Kile (13-6), whose RBI single in the second drove in St. Louis'
first run, pitched his eighth career shutout and 23rd complete game
as the Cardinals stopped a four-game losing streak. Kile's last
shutout came April 30, 1998, for Colorado against the New York
Mets.
"It's a game that was big for us," Kile said. "We had a tough
series in New York and we needed to get a win."
Kile scattered six hits and one walk. He struck out six to join
Garrett Stephenson as the only Cardinal to throw a shutout this
season.
"I was just hoping to give us a chance, go deep into the
game," Kile said. "We lost some close games in New York and we
really needed one here. Fortunately, I caught a few breaks and we
were able to win."
St. Louis won for just the fourth time in its last 13 games. The
Cardinals, who acquired first baseman Will Clark and catcher Carlos
Hernandez before Monday's trading deadline, are 8-13 since Mark
McGwire has been out of the lineup with right knee tendinitis.
Shawon Dunston, who scored on Kile's single after hustling to
beat center fielder Milton Bradley's throw to second for a double,
made a diving catch on Bradley's drive to left center with runners
on first and third to end the third.
"The defense picked me up on a couple of mistakes," Kile said. Shawon Dunston made a heck of a play and kept the game close when
we were barely winning, 1-0."
Montreal lost its seventh straight to fall a season-worst eight
games under .500 at 47-55.
"There's not much to say," Expos manager Felipe Alou said.
"You've got to talk to Kile about tonight."
St. Louis took a 2-0 lead in the fifth as Fernando Vina scored
from third on Ray Lankford's double-play grounder.
Drew hit his 15th homer off Mike Thurman (2-2) with one out in
the sixth and Tatis hit his 14th with one out in the eighth to give
Kile a four-run lead.
"What can you say? I threw eight innings of average baseball,
and Kile threw nine innings of great baseball," Thurman said.
"That's going to win every time."
Thurman allowed 10 hits and four runs in eight innings in his
third start since returning from his second stint of the season on
the disabled list.
"Thurman threw well for us," Alou said. "He looked healthy.
At least that's a good showing tonight. He had a good fastball all
night, not quite 100 percent, but I'd say about 90 percent of what
we know he's capable of doing."
Game notes
CF Jim Edmonds didn't start because of a sore right hip. He
is day to day. ... Clark, who will fill in for McGwire at first
base, is expected to join the team Tuesday. Hernandez, acquired
from San Diego earlier in the day, was in uniform for the game. ...
Cardinals C Rick Wilkins and OF Thomas Howard were designated for
assignment. ... The Expos acquired LHP Scott Downs from Chicago for
LF Rondell White. Downs, 24, who was 4-3 with a 5.17 ERA in 18
starts for the Cubs, is expected to join the team on Tuesday. ...
Thurman threw 71 of 104 pitches for strikes. ... The game took 2
hours, 11 minutes. ... Montreal's Michael Barrett caught the ninth,
his first appearance behind the plate this season. ... With LHP
Trey Moore scheduled to make his first major league start in two
years Tuesday, the Expos optioned Guillermo Mota to Triple-A Ottawa
following the game.
