Dreifort takes no-hitter into 6th

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A bit of tinkering has turned Darren Dreifort into something special.

"Just a couple little things with my mechanics -- that's been the difference lately," Dreifort said after taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 on Friday night.

Dreifort (7-7) gave up only two hits in seven innings, spoiling Omar Daal's Philadelphia debut. Dreifort allowed Mickey Morandini's two-out double in the sixth, a soft liner just inside the third-base line, and Scott Rolen's single leading off the seventh.

Dreifort extended his streak of shutout innings to 18. Mike Fetters and Jeff Shaw completed the two-hitter, with Shaw getting three outs for his 16th save in 23rd chances.

"When the defense plays like it did, pitching is easy," Dreifort said. "There was no point thinking about (the no-hitter). Nine innings is a long way and I wasn't even close."

Over his last three starts, Dreifort is 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA.

"Three times out, he's been very special," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said. "He hasn't been overthrowing lately. He likes to dominate people and strike them out. That's his mindset with him.

"Lately, he's been very smooth and doesn't try to overthrow on his sliders. When he does that and throws strikes, he's nasty."

Daal (2-11), acquired from Arizona in Wednesday's Curt Schilling trade, made his first start since July 2 and was done in partly by a defensive lapse. Daal, traded from Los Angeles to Montreal five years ago, struck out a season-high seven in five innings, allowing two runs and six hits.

"I've faced them many, many times," Daal said. "It didn't matter who I was pitching against, I just wanted to win the game."

Los Angeles loaded the bases in the third when Mark Grudzielanek singled and Shawn Green and Gary Sheffield walked. Eric Karros hit a high popup between shortstop Desi Relaford, Rolen at third and Daal, but none of them tried to catch the ball and it fell for an RBI single.

"There was communication on the popup and that cost us the game," Phillies manager Terry Francona said after his team dropped its fourth straight game. "It wasn't really high. Daal called it at first then here comes Rolen charging in 100 mph."

"I saw (Rolen) charging fast and I got out of there," Daal said.

Adrian Beltre followed with a single to right that scored another run, but Bobby Abreu threw out Sheffield at the plate. The Dodgers star injured his left ankle during the collision with catcher Tom Prince but remained in the game.

"It was just a little tweak, I'm fine," Sheffield said.

Philadelphia got just two runners past second. Morandini was hit by a pitch leading off the fourth, stole second and took third on a wild pitch, but Dreifort struck out Abreu, retired Rolen on a popup and struck out Pat Burrell.

Rolen singled in the seventh and Burrell walked, but pinch-hitter Rico Brogna hit into a 6-4-3 double play and Kevin Jordan grounded out.

Game notes
Beltre made a nice pickup on Travis Lee's leadoff grounder to third in the sixth inning. ... Lee also was acquired in the Schilling trade and made his Phillies debut as a defensive replacement in left in the sixth. Lee was 0-for-2. ... Phillies RHP Paul Byrd will have surgery on his right shoulder on Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season. ... Dodger Ps Eric Gagne and Onan Masaoka were optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque to make room for Ps Ismael Valdes, acquired on Wednesday in a trade with the Cubs, and Gregg Olson. ... The Schill-O-Meter, constructed by a fan who kept track of Curt Schilling's strikeout total during the game in the left-field seats, was crossed out and replaced by the Daal-O-Meter. ... It was the Dodgers' fourth shutout of the season and the fourth time Philadelphia was blanked. ... Cincinnati beat Philadelphia with a two-hitter on May 2.
