BALTIMORE (AP) -- On a night when Roger Clemens turned in a
gritty performance to win his fifth straight start, the Baltimore
Orioles unveiled a strikeout artist of their own.
Clemens remained unbeaten since June 9 and the New York Yankees
ruined an impressive major league debut by left-hander John Parrish
with a 4-3 victory Monday night.

Clemens (9-6) gave up three runs, six hits and a season-high
tying five walks in six innings. He struck out six and had only one
perfect inning, stranding eight.
"These are the games that I think I enjoy the most. It was a
mental battle, and I obviously made it tough on myself," Clemens
said. "It didn't look easy, but I felt I had good stuff."
Baltimore went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Mike Stanton retired five straight batters and Mariano Rivera
got four outs for his 23rd save in 26 chances.
Glenallen Hill homered in his initial at-bat with the Yankees,
who have won seven of 10. Hill was acquired Friday in a trade with
the Chicago Cubs.
Clemens was nearly outdone by Parrish, a 22-year-old who never
pitched above the Double-A level before this year. Parrish (0-1)
struck out nine, including Jorge Posada three times, and allowed
only three earned runs, four hits and two walks in seven innings.
Parrish struck out the side on 12 pitches in the first, blowing
away Chuck Knoblauch, Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams.
"That was a good feeling. I'm going to remember that for a long
time," Parrish said.
"It was a great debut for me, something I'll always remember,"
he said. "I'm pretty excited about the way I pitched."
The rookie retired 11 straight at one point, efficiently mixing
a sweeping curve with a 93-mph fastball. His nine strikeouts tied a
team record by an Oriole in his major league debut.
"It looked like he has a good changeup, a good curveball. The
only thing he lacked was the total command of it," Yankees manager
Joe Torre said. "His stuff was good. It looks like he just needs a
little polish."
The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in their half on singles by Brady
Anderson and Mike Bordick and a run-scoring grounder by Delino
DeShields.
Hill led off the second with a 394-foot shot to left, but Baltimore
regained the lead in the bottom half on an RBI double by Charles
Johnson.
New York went up 4-2 in the third. After Knoblauch hit a
sacrifice fly and Jeter singled in a run, an error by Orioles
rookie third baseman Ivanon Coffie allowed Jeter to score.
Again Baltimore responded, closing to 4-3 in its half when
DeShields singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by
Will Clark.
The Orioles loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth against
Clemens, who struck out Bordick to escape the jam.
"The guys gave me the lead and I kept letting the Orioles chip
back in it," Clemens said. "But every once in a while, these kind
of games are fun. They're a mental battle and they're fun to be
in."

Rivera moved past Goose Gossage into sole possession of
second place on the Yankees' save list (152). Dave Righetti has
224. ... Jeter has hit in 12 straight games and is on a 13-for-26
streak. ... DeShields stole two bases for the seventh time this
year. He has a team-high 26 steals, 15 ahead of Anderson, who has
led Baltimore for eight straight seasons. ... Parrish tied the
Orioles strikeout mark held by Sammy Stewart, who struck out nine
in his Baltimore debut in 1978. ... New York's Ryan Thompson
snapped an 0-for-13 skid with a seventh-inning single. ... Hill's
homer was his first in the AL since 1993. ... Albert Belle went
0-for-3 against Clemens and is .185 lifetime against him.
