Maddux falls to 9-2

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ATLANTA (AP) -- Jamey Wright was just good enough to beat Greg Maddux and the Atlanta Braves.

Wright outpitched Maddux to win his third straight start in the Milwaukee Brewers' 2-1 victory over the Braves on Saturday night.

Greg Maddux delivers in the fourth inning Saturday, but he couldn't deliver a win for the Braves.

Wright (4-1) scattered five hits, struck out seven and walked five in eight innings.

"It's a good feeling not to have my best stuff and still come out on top," said Wright, who won his third straight start. "After that first inning, I didn't think I'd be standing here telling you I won."

He has won his last five starts against the Braves and improved to 3-0 at Turner Field despite entering with a 6.17 ERA in two previous starts in Atlanta.

"I've had a few good games against them," Wright said. "But I've had some lucky games, too. My ERA is not what it should be against a team I've beaten five straight times."

Bob Wickman pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 11 opportunities.

Maddux (9-2), who pitched his third complete game, had won five straight decisions and had not lost since Los Angeles beat him 4-1 on May 3.

"I don't worry about that," Maddux said after he gave up six hits, walked one and struck out five. "I made two mistakes tonight. The other guy pitched a good game."

One mistake came when Jeromy Burnitz gave Milwaukee a 2-1 lead in the fourth with his 15th homer, a 454-foot shot to right field -- the longest in Turner Field history.

Andruw Jones hit a homer off Wright into the left-field seats to give him 100 for his career -- the fifth-fastest player to reach the mark.

"It's nice to have 100 homers in such a short career," Jones, 23, said. "I'll continue to play and see what happens."

Maddux fell behind 1-0 in the first after a line drive hit by Ron Belliard hit off his left knee. Belliard was awarded second base on a balk by rookie catcher Fernando Lunar.

Plate umpire John Shulock called the balk after Lunar set up outside the right line of the catcher's box. Braves manager Bobby Cox was ejected by Shulock for arguing the call.

"All I asked was that they enforce the rule," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. "That's what they're there for. You can't be set up a full foot outside the line."

Maddux walked Geoff Jenkins and gave up a single to Burnitz before Charlie Hayes hit an RBI grounder.

"What are you going to do?" Maddux said. "It seems like to me he would have more important things to worry about. I like my catcher to move. But you can't blame the umpire for enforcing it."

Game notes
Ryan Klesko held the previous record for the longest homer at Turner Field. Klesko hit a 449-foot shot against Arizona on Sept. 3. ... WTBS showed the catcher's box measuring a regulation 43 inches Saturday, but four inches too wide Friday. ... Wright hit Chipper Jones on the inside of his left foot with a pitch in the fifth. Jones talked briefly with trainer Jeff Porter but remained in the game. ... Brewers C Henry Blanco caught Chipper Jones trying to steal second in the first and then nailed Reggie Sanders in the sixth.
