A little rain can't keep Marlins from victory

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The weather was perfect for the Florida Marlins.

"The fish play well in wet conditions," said Marlins manager John Boles after his team withstood more than three hours of rain delays and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Monday night.

Alex Gonzalez and Paul Bako each hit two-run triples in the win as the Marlins improved to 3-0 in games with rain delays.

Last season, the Marlins had 16 rain delays and three postponements last season at home.

"Our guys are so accustomed to rain delays, it doesn't bother us," Boles said.

The start was delayed for 59 minutes, and the game was stopped again for 2 hours, 35 minutes with a runner on first and no outs in the bottom of the third inning.

Less than 200 fans remained in the stands when the game was restarted and the last out was recorded at 2:06 a.m. ET Tuesday, ending after all the West Coast night games.

Boles didn't think he had ever played in a game this late.

"It's pretty late, I don't know," he said. "But it was a perfect day."

Phillies manager Terry Francona minimized the impact of the long delay.

"It's tough on everyone," he said. "But it's the same old thing, you need to be one run better than the other team when the game is over."

The Marlins scored three runs in the third off Phillies starter Cliff Politte (0-1). Preston Wilson led off with a triple, and Derrek Lee walked one out later. Gonzalez followed with a two-run triple, and he scored on Politte's wild pitch.

Florida scored two more in the sixth when Bako's triple drove in Wilson and Lee to give the Marlins a 5-2 lead.

Vic Darensbourg (3-0) came in after the long delay and got the victory. He allowed one run, one hit, walked one and struck out four in three innings.

Antonio Alfonseca pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 19th save.

"Our bullpen is our greatest asset," Bako said. "Every arm is capable of shutting a team down."

Politte pitched the first three innings before the rain delay, but took the loss, giving up three runs, three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Francona said it was hard to stop his young pitcher from going out after the rain.

"Politte would want to go out after three hours of delay. He really wants to pitch," Francona said.

Politte drove in the Phillies' first run with a two-out RBI single in the third. Pinch-hitter Doug Glanville homered to lead off the fifth for Philadelphia's other run.

Game notes
Politte's RBI was the first in his major league career. ... The three triples by Florida were a season high. ... The time of 3:34 in total rain delays was the fifth-longest in Phillies history. The longest was 5:44 against San Diego on July 2, 1993. The team gave hats and ticket vouchers to the few fans who stayed through the delays. Those who decided not to wait it out are still entitled to exchange their ticket for a future game. ... Mark Kotsay went 4-for-5 for the Marlins. ... Glanville's home run was his first career pinch-hit homer, and the first for the Phillies this season. ... Despite more than three hours of rain delays, a member of the Phillies ground crew was seen hosing down parts of the infield after the game.
