ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Tampa Bay kept pecking, never really getting to Pat Rapp. B.J. Surhoff hit a three-run homer and Rapp scattered 11 hits while allowing only one run in six-plus innings to beat the Devil Rays 5-1 Monday. "I got two outs a bunch of times and couldn't put them away," said Rapp, who hadn't won since beating the Chicago White Sox on April 25 -- a stretch that included two losses and three straight no decisions. "I gave up a base hit, then another base hit and then I'd have to battle with two guys on," added the right-hander, who allowed at least one hit in every inning. "I was able to get out of it with guys on today." Surhoff's sixth homer finished a four-run second off Steve Trachsel (3-5), and Mike Bordick homered in the eighth and Baltimore won for the fifth time in six games. Jeff Conine had a RBI single in the second, but twice hit into double plays with the bases loaded. A day after pounding out a franchise-record 20 hits in a 14-4 victory over the Seattle, the Devil Rays finished with 13 hits off Orioles pitching. But they were just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, stranding 11. "We didn't hit with men on base. That's basically the game," manager Larry Rothschild said. "Thirteen hits with only one run. That says you're not hitting with men on. And, that was the case." Trachsel, pitching on two days' rest after lasting just a third of an inning in a loss to Oakland on Friday night, got off to another shaky start. Conine's RBI single gave Baltimore a 1-0 lead, and Surhoff followed with his sixth homer before the Tampa Bay starter settled down. Trachsel worked out of a jam in the third after Delino DeShields singled and Albert Belle doubled with one out. Will Clark was given an intentional walk to load the bases, but the Devil Rays escaped when Conine hit a pop foul up the right field line and first baseman Fred McGriff made the catch, and then threw to the plate to catch DeShields, who was trying to score from third. Conine grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the eighth. "We had a couple of golden chances to blow the game open ... and we didn't get it done," Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said. "We pitched well enough to pitch past those mistakes." McGriff, who's two homers shy of 400 and stuck in a 5-for-33 slump, struck out with two runners on in the first, grounded out in the same situation in the third and was retired on a soft liner to first with two runners on in the seventh. "We just couldn't get key hits. Bottom line," McGriff said. "You're hoping the pitcher keeps you in the game and some way you're able to scratch across some runs." Tampa Bay had nine hits -- all singles -- off Rapp before Russ Johnson doubled leading off the seventh. Felix Martinez reached on an infield single, and Rapp lost his shutout when Johnson scored on Randy Winn's grounder to DeShields, who was charged with an error when he failed to get a force out at second. Mike Trombley replaced Rapp and got the first two outs in the seventh. Buddy Groom came on to get McGriff to line to Will Clark to get out of the jam. Bordick restored the Orioles' four-run lead when he hit Trachsel's first pitch in the eighth into the left-field stands. Game notesIt was Turn Back The Clock Day at Tropicana Field, with the Orioles wearing replicas of uniforms from their 1970 World Series championship season. The Devil Rays wore uniforms of the 1966 minor league St. Petersburg Saints ... Plate umpire Tim Timmons was brought in as a replacement for Ed Rapuano, forced to leave Sunday night's game between the Yankees and Red Sox when he was struck on the right knee by a foul ball ... Surhoff was 7-for-55 (.127) before his homer ... The jerseys the teams wore will be auctioned for charity.
