DETROIT (AP) -- Something borrowed, something blue and a big dose of Carlos Delgado's power added up to the first major league victory for Toronto rookie Clayton Andrews. Delgado hit two homers to drive in five runs as the Blue Jays beat the Detroit 12-7 on Sunday. Andrews (1-1), who had to borrow a pair of spikes from Paul Quantrill, tossed four perfect innings of relief after taking over to start the fourth. "I didn't have any blue spikes and I wasn't going out there wearing black ones," said Andrews, who was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Syracuse. "Paul lent me a pair of his. I might not give them back, now." Andrews was on a road trip with Syracuse when he got the call. "It was a surprise," he said. "I wasn't expecting to get called up, so I didn't pack any blue spikes." Luis Polonia, Dean Palmer and Bobby Higginson homered for the Tigers. Delgado gave the Blue Jays an 8-6 lead with a two-run homer, his 16th, in the sixth. He hit a three-run shot in the eighth. "Clayton came in and shut them down," said Delgado, who is 17-for-45 over his last 12 games. "The way we've been swinging the bats lately, we need our pitchers to keep us in some games. He did a great job today." Andrews, who kept the ball down while working both sides of the plate, allowed only four balls out of the infield. "It's an awesome feeling," Andrews said. "It feels great. This is something you dream about." Willie Blair (2-1), who relieved starter C.J. Nitkowski in the fourth, took the loss. Blair gave up five runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. The loss of batting practice to pregame rain didn't seem to bother either team. The Tigers scored four in the first, but Toronto came back with three in the second and three in the fourth. "What's disappointing is that we put some runs on the board early and let it get away," Detroit manager Phil Garner said. Toronto's Alex Gonzalez made it 9-6 with an RBI grounder in the sixth. Delgado homered off Allen McDill in the eighth. Detroit loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk in the first. It looked as if Chris Carpenter might pitch his way out of the jam after getting Juan Gonzalez on a soft fly to short right and striking out Bobby Higginson. But Palmer hit a two-run single and Robert Fick followed with a two-run double to give Detroit a 4-0 lead. "Toronto's a good-hitting team," Fick said. "They didn't back down. They came right back." The Blue Jays got three of those back in the second. Nitkowski hit Tony Batista on the right hand and Marty Cordova followed with a single. An RBI single by Jose Cruz and a two-run double by Chris Woodward made it 4-3 with no outs, but Nitkowski settled down to end the threat on a groundout, strikeout and flyball. Polonia hit a solo homer, his third, for a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the inning. Higginson hit a solo homer, his fifth, in the eighth. Palmer hit a two-out solo shot, his ninth, to make it 6-3 in the third. Cordova and Cruz singled to start the Toronto fourth, Woodward made it 6-4 with an RBI double, and Blair relieved with no outs. Alberto Castillo's RBI grounder scored Cruz and Shannon Stewart's sacrifice fly to center drove in Woodward to tie it at 6. Nitkowski gave up six runs on seven hits over three-plus innings. Carpenter also yielded six runs on seven hits in three innings. Game notesThe Blue Jays are 12-3 against Detroit since the start of the 1999 season and have won nine of their last 10 against the Tigers. ... Delgado has two multihomer games this season and 19 in his career. ... Juan Gonzalez, who left Saturday night's game with a strained left foot after the seventh, returned to the lineup as the designated hitter. He was 0-for-5. ... Stewart extended his hitting streak to 12 games. ... The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 53 minutes because of rain. ... With two outs in the Detroit third, Jose Macias struck out, but reached when Carpenter's pitch in the dirt got away from catcher Alberto Castillo.
