DENVER (AP) -- Brian Bohanon never has been happy about a
demotion to the Colorado bullpen. Yet, he hasn't let his
displeasure carry over to his performances.
Bohanon gave Colorado manager Buddy Bell reason to reassess his
status with 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief as the Rockies rallied
from a six-run deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs 10-7 Tuesday night.
| | Kerry Wood allowed five runs in six innings in his return to the mound Tuesday night. | "We scored 10 runs again tonight, but the key for us was Bo,"
Bell said. "He stopped the bleeding and let us get well."
This outing followed two appearances in which he combined to
give up a run in 8 2/3 innings. Including Tuesday, opposing hitters
are hitting .143 against him since his move to the bullpen.
In his return to the mound, Chicago's Kerry Wood walked two and allowed five runs in six innings, and got a no-decision.
Jeff Reed staked Wood to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with his
second homer of the year, a two-run shot off Arrojo, after Sammy
Sosa scored on Greene's sacrifice fly.
Wood faced the minimum through three innings, but the Rockies
broke through with a four-run fourth. A double by Goodwin and a
triple by Mike Lansing made it 6-1, Bubba Carpenter had an RBI
single and Brent Mayne followed with a two-run double.
Goodwin made it 6-5 with a solo homer in the fifth inning.
"I had all four pitches working and my location was good,"
Wood said. "I pitched well the first couple of innings and got a
little off track in the fourth."
It was the eighth
straight home game the Rockies scored 10 or more runs, extending
their major league record.
Neifi Perez gave the Rockies a 7-6 lead with a homer off Daniel
Garibay (0-1).
Bohanon (2-3) gave up one hit and struck out one after taking
over for Rolando Arrojo with one out in the fifth and Chicago
leading 6-0.
Tom Goodwin also homered for Colorado, and Jeffrey Hammonds'
three-run homer in the eighth brought the Rockies to double digits.
"Our bullpen has given us problems. If we had gotten a double
play in the eighth, it would have gotten us out of the inning, but
instead Brian Williams gives up a three-run homer," Chicago
manager Don Baylor said. "Garibay had done a good job of getting
guys out for us, but he couldn't do it tonight,"
For the Cubs, Willie Greene homered and drove in three runs. Greene and Damon Buford extended Chicago's lead to 6-0 with home runs
in the fourth.
