ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) _ John Wetteland became the 12th reliever to get 300 saves, Royce Clayton hit his first major league grand slam, and rookie Doug Davis got his first big league win as the Texas Rangers beat the Anaheim Angels 13-11 Friday night.

Wetteland, 33, earned his milestone save in the second-fewest appearances, 553. Dennis Eckersley reached 300 in 499 appearances. Wetteland gave up five hits, including Mo Vaughn's solo homer and Garret Anderson's two-run shot, in 1 1-3 innings.

In a game that featured four homers by Texas and five by Anaheim, Mike Lamb hit a two-run shot and Ruben Mateo added a solo homer as Texas pounded Scott Schoeneweis for nine runs on nine hits over six innings.

The Rangers' Ivan Rodriguez added his 13th homer, a solo shot off Mike Fyhrie in the seventh, and two triples. His second triple drove in Luis Alicea to make it 12-8 in the ninth, and Rafael Palmeiro's sacrifice fly scored Rodriguez

Davis (1-1), making his second start and fourth major league appearance, allowed five runs on seven hits, including three homers, in six innings. He walked three and struck out five.

Clayton drove a 3-2 fastball from Schoeneweis (4-2) deep over the left-center field wall in the sixth to break open what had been tight game and give the Rangers a 9-4 pad.

The one-out homer was Clayton's sixth of the season and the grand slam was the first in the big leagues off Schoeneweis, in his second year in the majors and first as a starter.

The Angels were still reeling from the news that teammate Kent Mercker was in intensive care Friday after being hospitalized for bleeding in his brain. He left the Angels' game early the previous night, complaining of headaches and dizziness.

Team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum said after visiting Mercker early Friday night that the pitcher was alert and completely coherent and that the bleeding had stopped. Mercker, 32, was hospitalized late Thursday night and will remain in intensive care at UC-Irvine Medical Center through the weekend for further tests and observation.

The Angels' Bengie Molina hit a pair of solo homers off Davis, his first home runs of the year, and Tim Salmon had a two-run homer in the opening inning. Molina also doubled home a run in the eighth and had a career-high four hits in four at-bats.

David Segui doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth after the Angels tied it 4-4 on Molina's homer in the fourth. The Anaheim catcher also homered in the sixth.

Lamb's second homer of the season trimmed an early Angels' lead to 3-2 in the fourth.

Mateo's homer put the Rangers up 4-3 in the fourth after Palmeiro tied it at 3 with an RBI groundout earlier in the inning. Lamb also had a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Davis, the organization's minor league pitcher of the year in 1999, was called up to replace the ineffective Mark Clark in the Rangers' rotation and made his first start last Sunday, giving up six earned runs on four hits and six walks in a 7-6 loss to Oakland.

Notes: Wetteland tied Bruce Sutter for 11th on the career saves list. ... Texas left-hander Justin Thompson underwent arthroscopic surgery Friday to repair a torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder. The surgery was performed in Fort Worth by Rangers' orthopedist Dr. John Conway, who said the procedure went as expected and that Thompson has a good chance of being ready for next season. ... Rangers infielder Frank Catalanotto, on the DL since pulling a groin muscle on April 21, was assigned on rehab to Triple-A Oklahoma. ... Anaheim shortstop Gary DiSarcina, who went on the 15-day DL Monday with a sore right shoulder, will travel to Chicago to have Dr. James Yao, a vascular surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, perform further tests on his shoulder. MRI and other tests so far have failed to determine the cause of the pain. ... The three homers off Schoeneweis in a span of 3 1-3 innings matched the number he gave up in 41 1-3 innings in his previous six starts.
