Chicago belts Seattle, ends 3-game skid

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago White Sox hitting coach Von Joshua should be able to get a good night's sleep for a change.

Mark Johnson hit a three-run homer and Greg Norton added a two-run shot in an 11-run fourth inning to lift the White Sox to an 18-11 victory Tuesday night over the Seattle Mariners.

Joshua had been working overtime with Chris Singleton, who had four hits and four RBI.

"Honestly, it's been a challenge for me," said Singleton, who had just four hits in his last 26 at-bats entering the game. "Anybody who would say it hasn't been isn't telling the truth. I wanted to pick up where I left off last year but I've been putting too much pressure on myself.

"I'm glad to be able to figure things out for myself," Singleton said. "I know Von has lost sleep at night trying to get things figured out for me."

The Mariners, who scored 47 runs in a three-game sweep in Toronto over the weekend, gave up their most runs in an inning since allowing 11 against the Blue Jays on July 20, 1984.

"Today really was the only game we played that we were out of -- and today we were out of it in a hurry," Seattle manager Lou Piniella said.

Norton drove in four runs, adding a two-run single in the seventh as the White Sox scored their most runs since beating Minnesota 19-11 on Aug. 4, 1992.

The White Sox overcame a 6-2 deficit in the fourth, sending 14 batters to the plate and totaling nine hits. Carlos Lee had a pair of RBI singles in the inning, and Singleton and Johnson each had two hits.

The 11 runs in one inning were the most scored by the White Sox since an 11-run fifth inning Oct. 3, 1987, against Oakland.

"You don't see that very often," Johnson said. "A lot of things have got to go right for us and a lot of things have to go wrong for them. It was freakish."

"It only counts as one loss, that's for sure," Piniella said.

Paul Konerko added a two-run homer in the seventh, his third, and Norton had a two-run single as the White Sox snapped a three-game losing streak before a sparse crowd of 9,898.

Edgar Martinez went 4-for-4 for Seattle, driving in four runs and hitting a two-run homer. David Bell drove in two runs for the Mariners. Tom Lampkin hit a three-run homer in the ninth.

"It would've been a lot better if we had a win," Martinez said.

Tanyon Sturtze (1-1) picked up the win, giving up three runs and four hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Aaron Sele (1-1) allowed eight runs and nine hits in three-plus innings.

"I was brutal out there and I didn't give my team a chance," Sele said. "I was scuffling all night."
