Nevin, Klesko homer as Padres win 3rd straight

MONTREAL (AP) -- Phil Nevin hit a three-run homer and Ryan Klesko added a two-run drive Friday night to lead the San Diego Padres to their third straight victory, 10-5 over the Montreal Expos.

Brian Meadows (1-0), making his first start for the Padres, led 9-0 before he was chased in a four-run sixth.

Montreal third baseman Michael Barrett had two errors, giving him six this season. The Expos had five in all and have 12 in five games this season. Last year, Montreal led the major leagues with 160 errors.

Damian Jackson got a career-high four hits for the Padres, an RBI double in the third and three straight singles, after striking out in the first.

Padres leadoff hitter Al Martin went 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, reaching safely in his first four appearances before an inning-ending grounder in the seventh with runners at the corners.

Tony Gwynn, who got his 3,000th hit last Aug. 6 at Olympic Stadium, was forced to sit out his third straight game with a sore right elbow.

Jose Vidro was 4-for-5 with two doubles for Montreal, making him 12-for-21 (.571) with four doubles.

Nevin connected off Jeremy Powell in the third for a 3-0 lead. He is 6-for-15 (.400) with five RBIs during San Diego's 3-1 start.

Klesko, who went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, followed Jackson's run-scoring double in the third with his first homer, making it 6-0 and chasing Powell, who allowed five hits in three innings.

Martin and Jackson added RBI singles off Miguel Batista in the fourth. Klesko, acquired in a trade with Atlanta last Dec. 22, made it 9-0 with a run-scoring single off Batista in the sixth.

Meadows, acquired Nov. 15 in the trade that sent Dan Micelli to Florida, allowed four runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one.

Rondell White hit a two-run double in sixth, Lee Stevens had an RBI single and Chris Widger chased Meadows with double. Orlando Cabrera had an RBI grounder off Will Cunnane.

Game notes
San Diego last won three straight last Sept. 8-10. ... Padres starters Sterling Hitchcock, Woody Williams and Matt Clement were a combined 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA through San Diego's first three games. ... Chris Widger was called for catcher's interference in the seventh, one out after Barrett's first error.
