RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Darin Erstad went 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and five RBIs Wednesday night as Anaheim beat the New York Yankees 12-6 and gave rookie Angels manager Mike Scioscia his first victory.

Anaheim roughed up David Cone (0-1) for eight runs on five hits and five walks in 2 2/3 innings. Cone, who threw 76 pitches, struck out three.

Scott Schoeneweis (1-0), making his first major league start, gave up five runs on 10 hits, including consecutive solo homers by Shane Spencer and Tino Martinez in the fourth, over six innings.

Erstad, 9-for-14 this season, led off the Angels' first with a 420-foot homer over the wall in center.

He made it 3-0 with a two-run double to right-center off Cone in the second inning, then greeted reliever Alan Watson with another two-run double down the right-field line during the Angels' six-run third inning.

Matching his career high for RBIs in a game -- he had five against Toronto on Sept. 8, 1997 -- Erstad finished the opening three-game series with a .643 batting average.

Cone, 37, tired in the second half of last season, going 2-5 with a 4.83 ERA following his July 18 perfect game against Montreal. The Yankees, who signed him to a $12 million, one-year contract in the offseason, intend to give him extra rest between starts whenever they can.

Schoeneweis, 1-1 with a 5.49 ERA as a rookie reliever last year, struck out four and walked none as the Angels won the finale of the three-game set against the Yankees, two-time defending world champions.

Mo Vaughn had two hits and scored three runs for Anaheim and brought a huge cheer from the crowd of 24,560 with his first steal in almost three years.

Vaughn, hit by a pitch by Watson in the fourth inning, proceeded to steal second, barreling in head-first well ahead of catcher Jorge Posada's throw.

It was the first stolen base for the 6-foot-1, 268-pound Vaughn since May 26, 1997, and only his 29th in 1,188 career games.

Last year, Vaughn injured an ankle when he tumbled into a dugout on opening day and never fully recovered the rest of the season.

Garret Anderson drove in two Angels runs, with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.

Posada went 4-for-4 and scored three runs for New York.

Game notes
Yankees third baseman Scott Brosius was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained rib cage muscle. The Gold Glove winner injured his left side during batting practice before Tuesday's game and was scratched from the lineup. The Yankees recalled Alfonso Soriano from Triple-A Columbus to replace Brosius on the roster. ... Taking two of the three games in Anaheim, the Yankees have won 18 of their last 25 games on the West Coast dating back to 1998. ... Three years earlier, on April 5, 1997, Angels reliever Shigetoshi Hasegawa made his debut for the team, becoming just the fourth Japanese-born player ever in the majors. The others were Hideo Nomo, Makato Suzuki, and Masanori Murakami.
