TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ The Chicago White Sox lost reserve outfielder Brian Simmons for the season Thursday to a ruptured left Achilles' tendon in their final spring game in Arizona, a 7-6 loss in 10 innings to the Colorado Rockies..

While trying to stretch a double into a triple in the second inning, Simmons injured himself and was carried off the field. Simmons, who batted .145 (9-for-62) this spring, was scheduled to have surgery Thursday night.

``He was trying to extend that hit into a triple and it just snapped on him,'' Chicago general manager Ron Schueler said. ``He didn't have a great spring, but we know how versatile he is. He has great speed and plays all three (outfield) positions.''

In 54 games last season, the 26-year-old Simmons batted .230 and had four home runs and 17 RBIs.

McKay Christensen was called up from Triple-A Charlotte to fill Simmons' role as a reserve outfielder.

Simmons drove in the first run of the game when his double off Rockies starter Rolando Arrojo in the second inning scored Jeff Abbott.

Colorado, which had 18 hits in the game, took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Jeffery Hammonds, who went 3-for-3, doubled off Chicago starter Jim Parque and scored on Todd Helton's single. After Jeff Manto doubled, Terry Shumpert had an RBI groundout and Angel Echevarria hit a run-scoring single.

Aaron Ledesma's RBI double made it 4-1 in the eighth.

The White Sox tied it in the bottom of the eighth on Greg Norton's three-run homer off Julian Tavarez.

The Rockies took a 7-4 lead in the 10th inning against loser Chad Bradford. Greg Catalanotte had an RBI single, Ledesma had an RBI double and Juan Pierre added a run-scoring single.

Chicago scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th off reliever Manny Aybar on Liu Rodriguez's run-scoring groundout and an RBI single by Norton.

David Lee pitched the ninth inning to earn the win.

Notes: The White Sox placed C Brook Fordyce on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left foot. They also put INF Jeff Liefer on the DL with a strained knee. Both players were hurt earlier in spring training and the moves were retroactive to March 25.
