BOX SCORE
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) _ Brian Giles hit his first homer this spring and Kevin Young put Pittsburgh ahead with a two-run shot in the first inning of a 9-4 victory Monday over the Philadelphia Phillies. Giles, who hit 39 homers last season before fracturing a finger with 11 games to play, had gone 52 at-bats without homering until his two-run shot in the sixth. The drive off Scott Aldred landed directly under the Phillies' bus parked beyond the fence in right-center field. ``I remember one spring with the White Sox when Frank Thomas didn't homer until the last day, and he hit 30-some that season,'' Pirates manager Gene Lamont said. ``I think Brian Giles will hit quite a few homers this season.'' Young's homer was his second and came off Amaury Telemaco, who gave up six runs on eight hits in five innings. ``I should have pitched good to help myself, but I didn't,'' said Telemaco, trying to win a spot in the Phillies' rotation. ``If I don't end up starting, I have no one to blame but myself.'' Pirates starter Francisco Cordova, who brought a 1.29 ERA into the game, surrendered four runs on eight hits in 5 1-3 innings, his worst outing this spring. He will make one more exhibition start before starting April 7 against Arizona. Cordova helped himself in the second, fooling the Phillies' defense by squaring to bunt, only to slap a single into right field for his fourth hit in six at-bats. Jason Kendall followed with a sacrifice fly. Cordova left in the fifth following Rob Ducey's two-run homer, which made it 3-3 and was his fourth this spring. The Pirates regained the lead with a three-run fifth keyed by Luis Sojo's two-run double. Sojo played for the first time since spraining a wrist March 18. ``It's still a little sore, but I'm able to swing the bat, no problem,'' Sojo said. Light-hitting Pirates shortstop Abraham Nunez added a solo homer in the eighth off Yorkis Perez. The Pirates bullpen followed Cordova with 3 1-3 scoreless innings, with Chris Peters working 1 1-3 hitless innings and Scott Sauerbeck and Mike Garcia adding an inning apiece. Notes: Pete Schourek, apparently the frontrunner for the No. 5 spot in the Pirates' rotation, starts Tuesday at Fort Myers against Minnesota. Jimmy Anderson, also in the running, will pitch there in a Twins-Pirates Triple-A game. ... Pirates LHP Jason Christiansen, bothered by back spasms all spring, pitched two innings in a minor league game. The Pirates want to see if his back stiffens again Tuesday before deciding whether to place him on the disabled list.
