RECAP
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) _ Hideo Nomo, Detroit's opening day starter, was roughed up for six runs in 5 2-3 innings in his next-to-last spring game as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tigers 6-3 Friday night. Nomo, who had given up just 10 hits and four runs in 12 previous innings this spring, gave up nine hits, including a grand slam to Kevin Sefcik in the second inning. Pat Burrell added a solo homer in the fourth, and Desi Relaford later singled home Dave Doster, who followed Burrell's homer with a double to deep left-center. ``My fastball was up high,'' Nomo said through an interpreter. Nomo gave up singles to Sefcik and Rob Ducey to start the game, but avoided giving up any runs in the first when Detroit center fielder Juan Encarnacion caught a ball in deep left-center, then threw out Sefcik who had tagged up and was trying to advance to third. Nomo is scheduled for one more start, in Lakeland against Florida, before pitching the Tigers' season opener April 3 at Oakland. He said he feels ready physically to start the season. ``I have enough stamina to go,'' he said. ``I just need to avoid the big innings.'' Detroit scored three runs in the first off Phillies starter Chris Brock. Luis Polonia, who led off with a single, eventually scored on a wild pitch. Tony Clark, who snapped an 0-for-24 streak with a single Thursday, doubled to score the other two. Clark finished 2-for-4, improving his batting average to .119 (5-for-42) for the spring. Third baseman Dean Palmer sat out Friday night's game with a sore hamstring. He was expected to play Saturday against Cleveland in Winter Haven.
