JUPITER, Fla. (AP) _ Mark McGwire hit a three-run homer, but it wasn't enough to save the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Philadelphia Phillies overcame a seven-run deficit, beating the Cardinals 8-7 Monday on Tomas Perez's RBI single in the 10th inning.

McGwire made it 5-0 in the third inning with a three-run homer off Andy Ashby, McGwire's second of the spring and first since March 10.

Ashby also allowed a two-run homer in the fourth to Ray Lankford and another two-run homer in the sixth to Shawon Dunston.

In all, Ashby gave up seven runs and 11 hits in 5 1-3 innings. His ERA rose to 8.84.

``I asked Eddie Perez about those two balls to left, and he said he never saw either one of them off the bat,'' St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said. ``It was definitely the wind. But the wind helped a couple of the balls we hit, too.''

Cardinals starter Pat Hentgen allowed four hits in five shutout innings.

``He's on the right track and it's very encouraging. He walked four in three innings at Florida but only one today,'' pitching coach Dave Duncan said. ``His balance is better and his delivery is more consistent.''

Philadelphia tied the game in the ninth with two runs that resulted in part from misjudged fly balls. Perez drove in the winning run after Kevin Jordan reached second on a wind-blown fly ball to center.

Notes: Cardinals starters had an 0.42 ERA in their 22 previous innings coming in. It was the first time in six games St. Louis gave up more than three runs. ... Jordan had three doubles, Doug Glanville and Mike Lieberthal two singles apiece for the Phillies. ... The Cardinals optioned INF Adam Kennedy and RHP Luther Hackman to Triple-A Memphis and sent OF Dante Powell outright to Memphis. ... St. Louis pitchers Gene Stechschulte and David Wainhouse have allowed just one earned run between them in 16 2-3 innings, pitching 8 1-3 innings each. ... Former Phillie Mike Schmidt, a Hall of Fame third baseman now living in Jupiter, visited with old friends during batting practice.
