JUPITER, Fla. (AP) _ Brian Rose doesn't think he has to beat anyone to win a job in Boston's starting rotation. ``Really, the only person I'm competing against is myself,'' he said Monday after the Red Sox defeated the Montreal Expos 8-6 in 10 innings. ``We're all part of the same team and we're all going to pitch at one time or another.'' Rose pitched three scoreless innings, allowing a hit to Jose Vidro and a walk to Vladimir Guerrero in the first before settling down. Rose ``pitched well today,'' said manager Jimy Williams, who also is considering Juan Pena as the No. 5 starter. ``They have a lot of good hitters over there but he changed speeds well and kept them off balance.'' Each team got 11 hits, with the Red Sox going ahead in the 10th on RBI singles by Carlos Rodriguez and Dernell Stenson. Williams' son, Brady, got the inning started by beating out an infield single and scored the tie-breaking run. Montreal tied the score in the ninth on Trace Coquillette's two-out RBI double and Brad Fullmer's single. Morgan Burkhart hit his second home run in as many days to help give Boston a 6-3 lead in the seventh. ``We couldn't have gone any more than 10 innings,'' Expos manager Felipe Alou said. ``Neither one of us had any pitchers left.'' Notes: The Expos' Fernando Seguignol hit a solo home run off Andy Benes in a ``B'' game Monday, won by St. Louis 4-2. The game was halted after eight innings to allow Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and several players time to get to Port St. Lucie for the ``A'' game against the New York Mets. Casey Candale, trying to make the team this spring, had three hits while Luis Garcia and Thomas Howard had two each for the Cardinals. Tomas DeLaRosa had two hits for the Expos. Trey Moore was the losing pitcher, giving up all four runs on six hits in two innings. ... Alan Benes, who has missed the last two seasons with shoulder injuries, will pitch in a ``B'' game against the Expos on Friday. ... The Expos re-assigned pitchers Bryan Hebson, Michel Laplante and Yovanny Lara to their minro league camp. ... The Expos signed Japanese first baseman Yuji Nerei out of the Play Ball Academy in Fort Lauderdale.
