JUPITER, Fla. (AP) _ For most pitchers, a shutout inning in a spring training game doesn't mean that much. For Trey Moore, it was a milestone.

Facing major league batters for the first time in two years, Moore did just fine Thursday in the Montreal Expos' 4-3, 10-inning win over the Florida Marlins.

Moore had arthroscopic surgery Aug. 5, 1998, to repair a torn labrum and fraying of his rotator cuff in his left shoulder.

``It's been a long time coming,'' said Moore, who got three infield grounders in the sixth. ``Sure, I was a little anxious before I went out there. It was a big step. But it felt good when I came back to the dugout and everyone wanted to shake my hand. They were all pulling for me.''

Moore had begun the 1998 season in the starting rotation. He had 11 starts in 13 appearances by June 6, going 2-5 with a 5.02 ERA in 61 innings.

In only game innings last year came in the Triple-A International League while rehabbing.

``We had seen him throw on the back fields and he was throwing hard and well,'' Expos manager Felipe Alou said. ``He has a great changeup.''

In all, six Expos pitchers scattered eight hits and four walks while striking out eight. Dustin Hermanson allowed two hits in four shutout innings and fanned three.

Trace Coquillette tied the score with a solo homer in the eighth off Nelson Lara and won it with a RBI single in the 10th off Claudio Vargas, giving the Expos their fourth straight win.

``He's a good clutch hitter late in the game,'' Alou said. ``He did a lot of that at Ottawa last year. He's playing a competitive position. We have a lot of veterans at second base this spring.''

Jose Vidro, Mickey Morandini, Mike Mordecai and Wilton Guerrero are among his competition.

Brian Schneider hit a solo homer for the Expos.

Florida starter Vladimir Nunez gave up a run on three hits in the second inning and one base hit each in the first and third. He struck out three.

``He did OK,'' Florida manager John Boles said. ``He threw 46 pitches but he got a few up, that's all.''

Notes: The Marlins, always on the lookout for prospects, have scheduled an open tryout Friday at Viera from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Players not attending high school or college may attend.
