PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) _ The New York Mets hit five home runs in a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, yet the biggest ovation was saved for country singer Garth Brooks who caught the final out of the game.

Brooks, a non-roster invitee, entered the game in left field in the top of the eighth and drew a standing ovation from the crowd of 6.,056 after flagging down a knuckling fly ball to end the game.

``The ball was doing some weird things in the wind,'' Brooks said. ``But I stayed with it.''

Brooks struck out in his only plate appearance and limped around the clubhouse as a result of taking a foul ball off his left foot during batting practice.

Robin Ventura, Rey Ordonez, Edgardo Alfonzo, Jorge Toca and Kurt Abbott all hit solo homers for New York.

Angel Pena hit a solo homer off Paul Wagner in the ninth for the Dodgers.

Ventura, who was pinch hitting in the second inning, opened the Mets scoring with a home run to right-center off Dodgers starter Chan Ho Park. Ordonez greeted former Mets pitcher Orel Hershiser back with a towering home run to left field in the third inning. Two batters later Alfonzo homered to right field to make it 4-1.

Toca homered in the sixth inning off Gregg Olson and Abbott hit one in the seventh off Jeff Shaw.

Winner Rick Reed allowed one run and three hits in three innings for New York.

``I felt real good, I was worried about what my groin was going to feel like,'' Reed said. ``But that turned out to be OK.''

Reed and Melvin Mora had a collision earlier in the week and the pitcher wound up with a welt on his inner thigh. But that had no effect on him.

Reed has been working on a cut fastball this spring and hit Shaw Green with the pitch to lead off the second inning.

``Ask Shawn Green about that pitch, it hit him right in the back,'' Reed said. ``But believe it or not that's probably the best one I've thrown since I started throwing it. I wanted it inside and that's where it was.''

The Mets used 30 players during the game and Los Angeles used 25.

Kevin Orie went 2-for-3 for the Dodgers.

Notes: Mets GM Steve Phillips said Bill Pulsipher's test results from his 24-hour monitor showed a couple of irregularities. The results are being sent to a New York cardiologist for further review. ``We just want to dismiss any concern,'' Phillips said. ``Right now there's no enough concern for us to shut him down.'' Pulsipher is slated to do side work Sunday and pitch in Wednesday's game.
