PHOENIX (AP) _ Bo Porter hit a three-run double and Jorge Velandia a two-run homer to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 9-5 victory Friday over the Milwaukee Brewers. Porter, a former college football and baseball standout at the University of Iowa, was selected from the Chicago Cubs in the major league draft in December and is trying to win a job as a backup outfielder. His bases-loaded hit keyed a four-run first inning against loser Rocky Coppinger. Coppinger, trying to win a job in the Brewers' rotation, got into trouble when rookie first baseman Kevin Barker misplayed a line drive off the bat of Ben Grieve, who earlier in the day agreed to a $13 million, four-year contract. Velandia homered off Valerio De Los Santos, who allowed three runs in two innings. Jose Hernandez hit a two-run homer for the Brewers. John Snyder, picked up during an offseason trade with the Chicago White Sox, needed just 20 pitches to retire the six men he faced.
