Piazza-less Mets roll past Diamondbacks

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

NEW YORK (AP) -- Minus Mike Piazza, the New York Mets made up for his potent bat with John Olerud. And Rickey Henderson. And Benny Agbayani.

The Mets overcame the absence of their cleanup hitter, with Olerud driving in three runs and sparking a big sixth inning for a 9-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks and a 2-1 lead in the NL division series.

From the left, Rick Reed, Todd Pratt and Rey Ordonez celebrate after Pratt crossed home plate in the sixth inning.

"I think any time you lose a guy like Mike Piazza, he is such a big part of our offense, that definitely hurts," Olerud said. "But we have got a lot of guys on this club that can swing the bats. We needed a big offensive performance and got some big hits."

With Piazza's banged-up left thumb in a cast -- it's not broken, but very swollen because of a cortisone shot -- his status for the rest of the playoffs is uncertain. Still, the Mets managed to win without their All-Star catcher.

"You saw how they responded to it," Mets manager Bobby Valentine said.

Rick Reed, pitching to backup Todd Pratt, worked six strong innings. After Olerud and Darryl Hamilton hit two-run singles in the sixth, the Mets' bullpen and a loud crowd of 56,180 closed out the first postseason game at Shea Stadium since 1988.

Now, New York gets its chance to advance to the next round Saturday afternoon in Game 4, with or without Piazza. Al Leiter, who pitched a shutout in the wild-card playoff against Cincinnati, starts for the Mets against Brian Anderson as the Mets try to finish off the best-of-5 series.

Henderson had three hits, including an RBI single, and stole his Division Series-record sixth base of the series for the Mets. Agbayani, batting cleanup for the first time in his major league career, added two hits and Pratt drew two walks and scored a run.

GAME 3 AT A GLANCE
Every game a hero
John Olerud made up for the absence of Mike Piazza by getting two hits and driving in three runs. Olerud's biggest hit came in the Mets' six-run, sixth inning when he had a two-run single that gave the Mets a 6-2 lead, putting the game out of reach.
Key number
Six. The number of stolen bases Mets leadoff hitter Rickey Henderson has in the series. Henderson is also batting .455 while Diamondbacks leadoff hitter Tony Womack is batting a woeful .077 in the series.
Last word
"I think any time you lose a guy like Mike Piazza, he is such a big part of our offense, that definitely hurts. But we have got a lot of guys on this club that can swing the bats. We needed a big offensive performance and got some big hits."
-- Olerud

"I'm not Mike," Pratt said, referring to Piazza's 40 home runs and 124 RBI. "I can handle the bat. I can handle myself defensively. But I'm not Mike. We all know that."

Turner Ward had a two-run, pinch-hit homer for the Diamondbacks, but little else went right for them. Arizona hurt itself by making three errors and issuing eight walks.

"It certainly wasn't characteristic of the way we've been playing," Arizona manager Buck Showalter said.

Dan Plesac, who began his major league career in 1986, made his first postseason appearance and it was a disaster. Brought on to retire left-handed hitters -- they batted .186 against him this year -- the 37-year-old lefty gave up the game-breaking singles to Olerud and Hamilton.

"You can't control what happens once the ball leaves your hand," Plesac said. "What matters is results."

Omar Daal beat Reed twice in the regular season, but could not duplicate that success Friday.

Agbayani led off the second with a single and a two-out walk to Pratt set up an RBI single by Rey Ordonez.

The Mets made it 3-0 in the third on Olerud's RBI single and a run-scoring grounder by Robin Ventura. Arizona had a chance to turn an inning-ending double play on Ventura's ball, but shortstop Andy Fox overthrew Daal covering first base. Daal pounded his hand on the dirt as the ball sailed out of play.

Ward batted for Daal and homered in the fifth. That was the lone mistake by Reed, who allowed four hits.

"Our backs were against the wall just to get into the playoffs, so we're relaxed," Reed said. "I'm just glad Al Leiter's on the mound, he's played so well in the big games."

Olerud struck out with the bases loaded to end the fourth, then the Mets put it away in the sixth against Darren Holmes and Plesac. Walks to Pratt and pinch-hitter Bobby Bonilla set up Henderson's RBI single, and Plesac allowed run-scoring hits by Olerud, Roger Cedeno and Hamilton.

Despite the loss, the Diamondbacks were not daunted.

"The pressure is on them," Arizona center fielder Steve Finley said. "If we win tomorrow, we're going home and they have to face Randy Johnson."
