Volleyball Recruiting Buzz: Signing Day By Jeff Goodman SchoolSports.com | ||||||
Yesterday was the early-signing date for volleyball, and although the word has been out verbally for some, many of the top girls' volleyball players officially committed to colleges. At the top of the list for this year's recruiting class is the announcement of University High's (Ill.) Ogonna Nnamani, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter who will attend Stanford University. While this announcement was not a surprise, there was some question because Stanford is not the national powerhouse this season that it has been in the past few years. Nevertheless, Nnamani will join Olympic team member Logan Tom and try to help return Stanford to national championship contention. Several other top players had already orally committed but made it official yesterday. At the setter position, some of the biggest announcements were: Kelli Walsh, Archbishop Mitty High (Calif.) - Long Beach State Hayley Anderson, St. Francis High (Calif.) - University of the Pacific Lexy Beers, Mira Costa High (Calif.) - Texas A & M Mari Bell, Notre Dame High (Ky.) - Santa Barbara Michelle Lynch, Jacksonville High (Fla.) - Nebraska At outside hitter, Nnamani was the top recruit, but there were many blue-chip players at this position as well. Some of the top announcements were:
Ogonna Nnamani, University High (Ill.) - USC At the middle blocker position, the top early commitments were: Heather Cullen, Newport Harbor High (Calif.) - UCLA Carrie Moreira, St. Mary's High (Calif.) - Texas A&M Allyne Rebholz, Indianapolis Cathedral (Ind.) - Nebraska Taylor Williams, Gainesville High (Fla.) - Florida Megan Wallin, Cardinal-Mooney High (Ohio) - Michigan State One thing to keep in mind is that Nov. 8 reflects only the early-signing date. Many of the top recruits have committed and signed yesterday. However, there are many other top players who will wait to make their decisions until after taking visits and completing their high school seasons. In some cases, there are late signings once the college coaches have a chance to watch the first few club tournaments, beginning in January. The early commitments allow the college coaches to complete the recruiting process for their key positions and scholarships. At the same time, it allows many athletes an opportunity to take care of the stress that usually accompanies their senior year. With the club volleyball season being a significant recruiting period, there are some spots that will remain open into the winter. The Los Angeles and Arizona club tournaments in January and the Las Vegas tournament in February become significant for those last available positions.
