Football recruiting buzz: Narrowing the field

The nation's top prep quarterback, Brodie Croyle of Westbrook Christian High (Ala.), is close to making a decision and plans to enroll in college in January.

He has narrowed his choices to Florida State, Alabama, Oklahoma and Miami. Croyle, who will begin jogging any day now after suffering a season-ending torn ACL in the opening game of the year, took a trip to Tallahassee, Fla., this past weekend and has already visited Oklahoma. He will head to Alabama for an official visit this weekend and then contemplate his choices.

"I want to go where I'm going to be able to play early," says the 6-foot-4, 200-pound signal-caller. "I also want a chance to win the national title and go somewhere that has the best offensive line. I really don't feel like tearing my other knee up."

Croyle's father, John, played defensive end for Bear Bryant's 1973 national championship team at Alabama, but the younger Croyle hasn't been influenced by his dad.

"He has never pushed Alabama, even when I was little," says Croyle. "Plus, my mom went to Auburn."

Look for Croyle to eliminate Miami from the picture because the Hurricanes have sophomore quarterback Ken Dorsey, who is playing well.

Leaders of the Pack
Cardinal O'Hara High (Pa.) running back Kevin Jones is leaning toward Virginia Tech or Penn State, but that may change since he hasn't visited any of the other schools on his list. Jones, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior, is also looking at Tennessee, Michigan, Wisconsin and Notre Dame, but he has already visited Va. Tech and Penn State.

"I've been to each of them at least three times," Jones told SchoolSports.com last week. "(Virginia Tech quarterback) Michael Vick's easily the best player in the country. Hands down."

And it doesn't hurt the Hokies' chances of landing Jones now that Vick has decided to return for his junior season next year instead of departing for the NFL.

Jones, who took the SAT last week and should find out the results in the next few weeks, is planning to go to Tennessee for his first official visit on Nov. 10.

Change of Heart
Cedric Houston orally committed to his home-state Arkansas Razorbacks, but the Clarendon High (Ark.) running back has since changed his mind and is now leaning toward going out of state to play his college ball.

The 6-foot-3, 203-pound senior is intrigued by the University of Tennessee and also lists Texas A&M, Miami, Michigan State and Mississippi as possibilities.

"I want to go somewhere where you get a bunch of recognition -- like Tennessee," says Houston, who ran a 4.35 40 this past summer at the University of Arkansas camp. "And I want to go somewhere where the running backs get the ball."

Houston is planning on attending the Vols' game Nov. 11 in Knoxville, Tenn., when they face the Razorbacks. He has already visited Michigan State's campus.

For Whom the Bell Tolls
Tolleson High (Ariz.) running back Mike Bell is getting recruited heavily by nearly every school in the Pac-10, but he really isn't sure where he's headed. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound back is looking at Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA and Oregon in the Pac-10 and is also considering Ohio State, Northwestern and Colorado State. In addition, he recently started receiving interest from Miami.

Bell has racked up 1,750 rushing yards and 25 TDs this season and is coming off a 331-yard performance a week ago against Millenium High.

"He's always worried about things like recruiting," says Tolleson head football coach Dan Widmaier. "There are so many other in-state kids who have committed, so it makes him think he should have committed. I've tried to tell him, ?You're the best.' "
