T.J. Ford picks Longhorns

T.J. Ford won't be following his friend, Carlos Hurt, out of state.

Ford, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound point guard from Willowridge High (Texas), was considering following Hurt, who used to play at nearby Elsik High, to Louisville. But Ford decided to commit to the University of Texas on Wednesday night.

Ford was also considering Cincinnati and Houston.

"T.J. is the glue to our ballclub," said Willowridge coach Ronnie Courtney. "He's the one who distributes the ball. He plays a very integral role to what happens on this club.

"His biggest strengths are his court sense and unselfishness. He made a good decision and it's a great situation for him."

Ford and Hurt are both point guards, so they would have battled for playing time throughout their college careers if Ford had chosen Louisville. Ford's numbers were far from earth shattering last season, primarily because the other four starters on his team are all Division I recruits. He averaged 10 points, nine assists and four steals per game last year.

The other players in the starting lineup for Willowridge were Ivan McFarlin, the lone senior who is at Oklahoma State; guard Daniel Ewing (Duke); guard Kenny Taylor (Baylor) and forward Curtis Walker, who is expected to commit to West Virginia.

Ford has still yet to achieve the necessary SAT score to be eligible for his freshman season.
