Willowridge Repeats at the Beach By Jeff Goodman SchoolSports.com | ||||||
Willowridge High (Texas) came into the Slam Dunk to the Beach with the goal of defending its title and making a case to be the No. 1 basketball team in the land. The Eagles accomplished their first task without much difficulty and now will have to wait and see whether they Baylor-bound Kenny Taylor, the third guard on the team behind floor general T.J. Ford (Texas) and sharpshooter Daniel Ewing (Duke), won tournament MVP honors after sinking a trio of 3-pointers in the first half and finishing with a team-high 16 points in a 61-43 victory over St. Patrick's (N.J.) in the title game on Saturday. Willowridge improved to 19-0 on the season after rolling past No. 8 Southern High (Md.) and a Tyson Chandler-less Dominguez High (Calif.) squad en route to the championship.
The championship game was much closer than the outcome suggested, but the Eagles went on a 15-3 spurt to end the contest. Ford scored just four points but grabbed 11 boards, while Ewing finished with 12 points. St. Patrick's was without its two top players, Marcus Austin (mononucleosis) and 6-foot-10 sophomore Grant Billmeier, who transferred and must sit out until mid-January. Forward Terry Hill led St. Patrick's with 20 points, while teammate Jamie Sowers (Wichita State) finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Dominguez, which was missing Chandler for the second straight game because of the flu, defeated Midwest City High (Okla.), 73-67, in the consolation game. Chandler, a 7-foot senior, is expected to bypass college and head to the NBA after this year. Darius Sanders led Dominguez with 21 points and 10 boards, while highly touted junior Shelden Williams poured in 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Oklahoma City. In other action on Saturday, Rice High (N.Y.) beat Southern High (Md.), 52-51, in the fifth-place game; Berkmar High (Ga.) pounded St. Jude High (Ala.), 85-39, in the seventh-place game. St. Jude's Ousmane Cisse didn't score in the game and played just 11 minutes in the loss. The all-tournament team consisted of: Shelden Williams and Oklahoma City teammate DeAnagelo Alexander, Cisse, Sanders, Sowers and Ewing. Coatesville High (Pa.) defeated St. Edward's High (Ohio), 70-57, to claim the title in the National Power Series bracket. Seton Hall-bound small forward John Allen continued his strong play with 30 points and 12 boards in the win.
