Dick's Dazzling Dozen: 2001-02

Each week, Dick Vitale identifies his Dazzling Dozen -- the nation's top 12 teams in the eyes of Dickie V (new rankings based on games played Monday-Sunday)

March 3
The top three remained the same in my Dazzling Dozen, though there was some movement after that. Kansas got past Missouri to finish the regular season unbeaten in the Big 12. That's an amazing accomplishment against some talented teams. The last time the Jayhawks went unbeaten in league play was 1970-71 in the Big 8 under Ted Owens.

Oklahoma moved up to No. 4 past Cincinnati after the Bearcats lost to Louisville and struggled to win in overtime against Memphis. Pittsburgh moved up to No. 6 while Oregon, a winner at USC and UCLA to clinch the Pac-10 regular season title, climbed to No. 7.

Alabama slid after Sunday's loss to Mississippi. Illinois, thanks to its eighth straight win (a Maalox masher against Minnesota on Sunday), moved back into the Dazzling Dozen.

1. Kansas
2. Maryland
3. Duke
4. Oklahoma
5. Cincinnati
6. Pittsburgh
7. Oregon
8. Gonzaga
9. Alabama
10. Florida
11. Marquette
12. Illinois

Feb. 24
There are very few changes in this week's Dazzling Dozen, but that doesn't mean all the top teams got through without a fight. Kansas remains No. 1, but the Jayhawks had quite a battle at Nebraska on Sunday, escaping with a hard-fought W, 88-87.

No. 2 Maryland also escaped with a 90-89 win over Wake Forest on Sunday. No. 4 Cincinnati got the winning basket from Donald Little in a 63-62 win over Marquette on Friday night. What an atmosphere at the Shoemaker Center, baby! Alabama moves up to No. 6 with its 65-64 win over Florida.

3. Duke
4. Cincinnati
5. Oklahoma
6. Alabama

With Maryland's big victory over Duke on Sunday, Kansas moves into the Dazzling Dozen's top spot. The Jayhawks, who have been very impressive lately, are coming off a win over Baylor on Saturday. Maryland moves past Duke to No. 2. Also moving up is Gonzaga with its big victory over Pepperdine. Oregon and Stanford move back into Dazzling Dozen at No. 11 and No. 12 respectively.

Feb. 11
Marquette continues to make its move up the Dazzling Dozen. Coach Tom Crean's team has done a super job and now sports a 10-game winning streak. Moving into the Dozen this week is Indiana, the Big Ten leader. The Hoosiers were impressive in wins over Iowa and Louisville. Duke and Kansas remain 1-2, which is no surprise.

Duke remains No. 1 in this week's Dazzling Dozen thanks to a win over Virginia on Sunday night. Figuring out the top four was not difficult since Kansas, Cincinnati and Maryland all won this week.

Upset City shook up the rest of the Dazzling Dozen. It just shows what great balance there is in college basketball. Among teams on the rise this week: Pittsburgh, with wins over Syracuse and Georgetown; Alabama, as the Tide scored a big win over Kentucky at Rupp Arena on Saturday night; and Memphis, as John Calipari's team is on a major role and not receiving enough publicity for it.

1. Duke
2. Kansas
3. Cincinnati
4. Maryland
5. Florida
6. Oklahoma
7. Virginia
8. Pittsburgh
9. Miami-Fla.
10. Alabama

While Duke remains No. 1 with two impressive wins (over Maryland and Wake Forest), Kansas climbs back to No. 2 with its own dynamic duo in the W column. Roy Williams' Jayhawks dominated at Stillwater against Eddie Sutton's Oklahoma State Cowboys. Kansas followed up with a big win over Oklahoma in Lawrence.

Florida slips to No. 5 with a home loss to Jim Harrick's Georgia Bulldogs. Also on the rise: Arizona, with wins over USC and UCLA. Ohio State cracks the Dazzling Dozen with its big win over Indiana. The Buckeyes are now in front of the Big Ten standings.

Jan. 14
Another week, another No. 1 ... last week's No. 1 team, Kansas, was upset at UCLA on Saturday. Duke, with its impressive showing at N.C. State on Sunday, is back in the top slot.

Once again, a number of upsets have shaken up the Dazzling Dozen. USC, with a win over crosstown rival UCLA, took over the lead in the Pac-10 and cracked this week's Dozen at No. 9. Cincinnati, which has gotten the job done with suffocating defense, is up to No. 3.

1. Duke
2. Florida
3. Cincinnati
4. Oklahoma
5. Maryland
6. Kansas
7. Syracuse
8. Oklahoma State
9. USC
10. Illinois
11. Virginia

Jan. 7
It was one of the wackiest weekends ever in college basketball. Everywhere you looked, it was Shock City, with another ranked team falling down.

The biggest news came Sunday night, when Duke fell to Florida State in Tallahassee. Kentucky lost to Mississippi State after the Wildcats built a 21-2 lead. Virginia, Oklahoma State and Miami fell from the unbeaten ranks. Illinois was stunned at Wisconsin and Iowa lost to Ohio State.

With all of these surprises, there are some big-time shakeups in my Dazzling Dozen. Kansas takes over as my new No. 1 team in America.

1. Kansas
2. Florida
3. Duke
4. Cincinnati
5. Oklahoma
6. Maryland
7. Kentucky
8. Syracuse
9. Oklahoma State
10. Virginia
11. Illinois
12. Stanford

Dec. 31
There was limited action this week, so there's virtually no change in the Dazzling Dozen. Butler moves in at No. 12 after its win over Indiana on Saturday night. Butler replaces Missouri, which falls out after losing to DePaul on Saturday (its third straight loss).

1. Duke
2. Kansas
3. Florida
4. Kentucky
5. Oklahoma State
6. Virginia
7. Maryland
8. Illinois
9. Cincinnati
10. Iowa
11. Oklahoma
12. Butler

Dec. 24
Duke remains No. 1 following its hard-fought win over Kentucky at the Jimmy V Classic. Despite the loss, Kentucky moves up. Surprises this past week include Oklahoma defeating Maryland and Stanford falling to BYU. Cincinnati is on the rise after wins over Mississippi State and Purdue (11 straight now for the Bearcats).

1. Duke

5. Oklahoma State
6. Virginia
7. Maryland
8. Illinois
9. Cincinnati
10. Iowa

12. Missouri

Dec. 17
There are only a few changes in this week's Dazzling Dozen. Missouri's home loss to Iowa dropped Quin Snyder's team down to No. 10. Arizona slipped a few spots with a loss at Michigan State.

Kentucky is a team on the rise, up to No. 5. The Wildcats meet my No. 1 team, Duke, in the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday night.

Once again, the ACC holds down the 1-2 spots, with the Dukies (coming off an impressive win over North Carolina A&T) and Maryland sitting atop the Dazzling Dozen.

1. Duke
2. Maryland
3. Kansas
4. Florida
5. Kentucky
6. Oklahoma State
7. Virginia
8. Boston College
9. Arizona
10. Missouri
11. Illinois
12. Stanford

Dec. 9
Not many changes at the top of this week's Dazzling Dozen, as the ACC tandem of Duke and Maryland remain 1-2. The Terps were impressive in wins over Connecticut and Detroit. Florida also had a solid week with victories over Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans and previously unbeaten South Florida.

Kentucky moves into the top 10 with a solid performance by Tayshaun Prince in Saturday's victory over North Carolina. Boston College also moves into the top 10 after hanging tough against Massachusetts. Ryan Sidney and Troy Bell are one of the more underrated backcourts in America. Bell received a lot of preseason publicity, while Sidney showed guts by playing despite suffering a broken jaw in practice earlier in the week.

Illinois falls to No. 11 after its loss to Arizona earlier in the week. The Illini struggled to get past Arkansas on Saturday.

1. Duke
2. Maryland
3. Missouri
4. Kansas
5. Florida
6. Arizona
7. Virginia
8. Oklahoma State
9. Kentucky

Dec. 2
Duke was impressive in handling Iowa in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and remains No. 1 in my Dazzling Dozen. The Blue Devils followed that with a W over Clemson in its ACC opener. Maryland moves up to No. 2 with its big win over Illinois. Kansas won at Arizona to move up to No. 4.

1. Duke
2. Maryland
3. Missouri
4. Kansas
5. Florida
6. Illinois
7. Arizona
8. Virginia
9. Syracuse

12. Iowa

Nov. 25
Duke survived a real scare against Seton Hall last week. Ball State also had a nine-point lead against the Blue Devils, but Coach K's team came through to win the Maui Invitational.

Illinois had a couple of scares last week, getting past Penn and Southern Illinois en route to the Las Vegas Invitational championship. Now Duke and Illinois get stiff tests in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge this week. The Blue Devils take on Steve Alford's Iowa Hawkeyes, while the Illini tangle with Maryland.

Here's a look at the season's first Dazzling Dozen:
1. Duke
2. Illinois
3. Arizona
4. Maryland
5. Missouri
6. Stanford
7. Kansas
8. Florida
