PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ben Gordon, Connecticut

Junior guard Ben Gordon of Mount Vernon, N.Y., had a big week in leading the top-rated Huskies to wins over Yale and Nevada in the Preseason NIT, plus a blowout over in-state rival Sacred Heart.

For the week, Gordon averaged 25.7 ppg and shot 60 percent from the field, including a remarkable 73.3 percent from 3-point range (11-of-15). He scored a career-high 37 against Nevada, hitting all four of his trifecta attempts.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Texas Tech
Coach Bob Knight's Red Raiders were special in convincing wins over Davidson and Massachusetts. I don't think Knight expected victories by a total margin of 71 points in those contests! Texas Tech has so many new faces, but the athleticism of the team Knight has assembled is impressive. Senior guard Andre Emmett is back leading the way, but the Red Raiders have a number of others who have shined early.

Freshman point guard Jarrius Jackson has shown an ability to score while limiting mistakes. He averaged 16.5 ppg in the two victories and did not commit a turnover. Senior forward Robert Tomaszek had a double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds) against the Minutemen. Emmett then scored 25 to lead the Red Raiders to a third win, 64-53 over East Tennessee State on Sunday night.

COACH OF THE WEEK: Roy Williams, North Carolina
The Tar Heels started the Williams era with an impressive 90-64 victory over Old Dominion. North Carolina's players seem really focused, and Williams has said he wants his team to enjoy the game. They certainly did against the Monarchs, as Rashad McCants led five players in double figures with 18 points.

SHOCK OF THE WEEK: Cal-Poly over California
Kevin Bromley is in his fourth season as head coach of the Mustangs, and I bet this was his biggest victory to date. Cal-Poly trailed 48-34 in the second half at Berkeley before rally time. Led by junior forward Nick Enzweiller, the Mustangs came back to pull off a 63-62 stunner.

Enzweiller, who had five trifectas and 17 points, hit the winning shot. The 3-point shot is a great equalizer in college basketball; the Mustangs made 9-of-24 while the Golden Bears hit just 3-of-12. It was Cal-Poly's first road win vs. a Pac-10 foe since 1976, when it won at Stanford.

DIAPER DANDY OF THE WEEK: Andrew Bogut, Utah
Coach Rick Majerus has found a real star in Andrew Bogut, the 6-10 Australian freshman. Bogut had double-doubles in his first two games of the Preseason NIT, wins over Georgia State and Minnesota. He finished with 19 points and 18 rebounds against the Golden Gophers. Bogut struggled against Stony Brook on Sunday, scoring just four points while grabbing five boards in a three-point, nail-biter win.
