Daniel Snyder is back, and it makes you wonder whether coach Marty Schottenheimer will be back in 2002.

The Washington Redskins' owner, who vowed to stay out of the football operation when he hired Schottenheimer, flew his private jet to Fort Collins, Colo., on Saturday night to personally scout Fresno State quarterback David Carr.

Snyder was accompanied by minority owner Fred Dreisner and Pepper Rodgers, who is listed as the team's vice president of football operations, although Schottenheimer still has control of all football-related decisions.

The three sat in the press box to observe Carr, who led Fresno State to a 25-22 overtime win over Colorado State. Carr has elevated himself to a potential top pick in next April's draft and did nothing to hurt himself with a 28-of-37 passing performance for 389 yards and two TDs.

"Sure, I was aware that he was going," Schottenheimer said Tuesday. "That's fine with me. I'm trying to get him more involved."

Really?

"Look," Schottenheimer said. "He's the owner of this team and he has tremendous passion for the Redskins. When you have an owner who cares that much, you want his involvement. He's already seen the Harrington kid, too [Oregon QB Joey Harrington]. That's why I asked him to go to the combine this year -- just to be a part of it."

Snyder did not just observe Saturday night. He did some talking, too. According to sources, he couldn't stop talking about Florida coach Steve Spurrier, who turned down the Redskins' job last January before it was offered to Schottenheimer. The sources say Snyder indicated he has not given up on the idea of pursuing Spurrier to coach his team.

Asked about the Spurrier talk, Schottenheimer said he had no comment.

Snyder could not be reached for comment. He watched his Redskins fall to 0-5 in a 9-7 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.
