April 22
After the New Orleans Saints selected Deuce McAllister with their first-round pick Saturday, the Cleveland Browns called the Saints to see if they would be interested in trading Ricky Williams.

Will the Saints hold on to RB Ricky Williams?
But salary-cap issues prohibit the Saints from moving Williams. Nevertheless, the Saints have made calls the past two weeks seeking interest in Williams, who is expected to report to mini-camp this week. Stay tuned.

Williams rushed for an even 1,000 yards in an injury-shortened 2000 season. He played in just 10 regular-season games before sustaining a broken left ankle Nov. 12 in a 20-10 win over the Carolina Panthers.

The Saints were 7-3 at the time of Williams' injury and finished 10-6, good enough to win the NFC West.

McAllister also struggled with injuries last season, his senior year at Mississippi. He suffered a sprained shoulder and a high ankle sprain that hampered his effectiveness at times.

Williams was the Saints' top draft pick in 1999 out of Texas and won the 1998 Heisman Trophy, leading the nation in rushing with 2,124 yards.
