Mort Report: Bills owner says he won't pay Phillips

Bills owner gets hearing with NFL over Phillips' contract

April 6
Bills owner Ralph Wilson Jr. has successfully petitioned the league to have a hearing to rule on his refusal to honor the remainder of coach Wade Phillips' contract.

Wilson asked the NFL for an expedited hearing because he plans to head to Australia for the start of a two-month vacation.

Phillips received notification from Wilson last month that he would not honor his contract because of alleged insubordination by refusing to fire special teams coach Ronnie Jones. While reports have labeled Phillips' salary at $750,000, league sources say the coach was due $950,000 in 2001, the final year of his contract.
