 ESPN.com news services

MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- NHRA Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher, who was involved in a spectacular crash Saturday in the AutoZone Nationals, plans to be in the driver's seat for the next race Oct. 19 in Dallas.

Schumacher recorded a track record 4.552-second pass during the first of two qualifying runs to lead the 16-car field for the AutoZone Nationals. On his final qualifying attempt, his dragster went out of control and crashed.

The 30-year-old driver was extracted from his car and taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. Schumacher suffered a broken left leg and fractured right foot in the accident and will be re-evaluated later this week in Chicago.

John Force (Funny Car), Scott Geoffrion (Pro Stock) and Greg Stanfield (Pro Stock Truck) qualified No. 1 in their respective categories at the $1.8 million event.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
