DOVER, Del. -- Kurt Busch went from first to last Thursday at Dover Downs International Speedway, wrecking his truck during a practice session less than two hours after winning the pole.
The accident, blamed on a cut right front tire, occurred with less than a minute left in final practice for Friday's MBNA E-Commerce 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck race. The 22-year-old driver slammed into the outside wall but was uninjured.
"Racing is a huge roller coaster," Busch said. "One minute you're winning the pole and the next they're bringing out the backup truck."
He qualified his Roush Racing Ford at 151.764 mph, but will have
to start his backup truck from the rear of the 34-car field.
The pole was Busch's third of the season. He won from the No. 1 starting slot at Milwaukee in July, then followed that victory a week later with a win in New Hampshire.
Greg Biffle, Busch's teammate who is on the verge of clinching
his first series title, was just one-tenth of a second slower than
Busch at 151.127.
Andy Houston, a two-time winner this season, was next at
150.194, followed by Winston Cup regular Ken Schrader at 150.188,
and two-time series champion Jack Sprague at 150.106.
