MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Pole-sitter Jeff Green outlasted
Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the final laps and won Sunday's NASCAR
Busch Grand National series Sam's Town 250 at Memphis
Motorsports Park.
Green took the checkered flag for the third time this season,
edging Earnhardt by 0.675 seconds in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo for
his fourth career victory and third this season.
Earnhardt, the series points leader, first took the lead on lap
208 of the 250-lap race. He extended his lead in the standings
to 156 points over Matt Kenseth with two races remaining.
Kenseth had mechanical problems and finished 21st.
Green, a longshot to win the Busch series title, is 210 points
behind Earnhardt, who also drove a Chevrolet to his 16th
top-five finish of the season. Elton Sawyer, Todd Bodine and
rookie Adam Petty rounded out the top five.
"It wasn't much I could do to hold him (Green) up," Earnhardt
"We'll take it, the 156 points."
As Busch series regulars, Earnhardt leads with six wins and is
followed by Kenseth with four and Green. Winston Cup regular
Mark Martin also has six wins but is not included in the series
standings.
Dick Trickle, Mike McLaughlin, Kevin Grubb, Tim Fedewa and
Lyndon Amick completed the top 10. Fedewa had the only Pontiac
in the top 19 and Sawyer drove the only Ford in the top 10.
The race was the first Busch series visit to the ¾-mile
Memphis Motorsports Park. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck series has
held races here each of the last two years.
The Outback Steakhouse 200, the penultimate race of the season,
is next Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway.
