SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse University quarterback Madei
Williams, a one-time heir apparent to Donovan McNabb's job as the
starter, will take his final year of eligibility to Southern
Illinois University at Carbondale.
Williams, a fifth-year senior from Pittsburgh, was behind Troy
Nunes and R.J. Anderson in the quarterback battle this year.
Because he is transferring to a Division I-AA school, Williams is
eligible to play right away at SIU.
Williams completed his undergraduate degree this semester. He
was unavailable for comment, but his mother told the Syracuse
Newspapers Friday her son wants to go to a school where he can
play.
"I mean, if you've been at a university for four years and you
are not given the opportunity other kids have been given, and
you're an athlete and you've been a winner on every level, you want
to play," Jennifer Williams said. "He doesn't feel he's complete
unless he gets a chance to play."
For two years, Williams played behind McNabb, now with the
Philadelphia Eagles. A hand injury in the 1999 preseason forced him
to the bench and gave Nunes a chance.
The two shared playing time in 1999 before Nunes got the nod for
the Music City Bowl. Anderson moved past Williams last season.
"We are sorry to see Madei leave our program," said head coach
Paul Pasqualoni in a prepared statement. "He has been an important
member of our squad. We're proud that he's obtained his
undergraduate degree from Syracuse University. I'm sure I speak for
the entire program when I say we wish Madei the best of luck."
