BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado coach Gary Barnett intends to turn around his 0-4 Buffaloes and he's taking some strong measures to illustrate his point.
| | | An 0-4 start has Gary Barnett getting tough with the Buffaloes. |
First, he benched linebacker Jashon Sykes for this weekend's game against
Texas A&M, saying Sykes has to learn it's a privilege to be on the field.
Then, he placed second-team defensive tackle Sam Taulealea, offensive tackle Jordan
Gehring and tight end Jake Jones on what he called strength and conditioning
leave. Barnett won't say how long they'll be out.
Now, Barnett has stripped the team's logo from the players' helmets.
Defensive end Brady McDonnell, a team captain, and free safety Robbie Robinson both said Barnett had told the team that it would have to earn the logo back.
"I don't like it a whole lot," McDonnell told the Denver Post. "I think it's degrading for us. We need to work hard and get that back. We're the Colorado Buffaloes of today, and we've got to prove it. It hurts. I'm not going to lie. Taking the decal off and saying we're not Buffaloes hurts."
Added Robinson, "I see his point. I know what he's getting at. He's right. But I don't know if that's motivation. I don't know if that's the way to motivate us, by stripping us of something like that. I know I take that pretty seriously, being a Buffalo, whether we're 4-0 or 0-4. I still call myself a Buffalo."
